HAWERA’S MAORI POSTS

FOR ERECTION IN SOME RESERVE. FORMERLY AT WAIHI CEMETERY. Four tall carved Maori posts are an interesting feature of the Hawera exhibition of antiques. These fine specimens of Maori art will be erected in one of the Hawera borough reserves. The posts, which are 14 feet long and of kauri, were shown at the big Christchurch exhibition in 1906, for which it is believed they were specially carved. Subsequently they were acquired by the Normanby Town Board and were erected on the summit of the slope at the Waihi cemetery. The posts remained there for 25 years but gradually the bases commenced to rot. The town board approached the committee controlling the Turuturu-Mo-kai reserve where it was felt the posts would be most appropriate, and that body agreed to look after them. It was not thought wise to erect them at Turu-turu-Mokai and they have been stored by the Hawera Borough Council for two years. In the meantime an excellent job has been made of restoring the posts where they rotted. They have been thoroughly treated with preservative and are now in good condition. The workmanship in the carving is considered interesting by experts. The carving varies a good deal while unusual features are incorporated in the design. One interesting point is that the figures have hands with five fingers, whereas the traditional number is only three. BOWLING AT HAWERA. OPUNAKE AND PIHAMA BEATEN.
