NECESSITY FOR REST ROOM
DEPUTATION AT NEW PLYMOUTH.
REQUEST OF WOMEN’S DIVISION. Urging the necessity for a rest room for women and children in Devon Street central, New Plymouth, a deputation from the North Taranaki executive of the Women’s Division of the Farmers Union waited on--the- New Plymouth Borough Council last night. The deputation, which consisted of Mesdames C. J. Harris and T. M(?Phfllips, asked if the council could; assist financially in the provision of such a room. The council referred, the jnatter to its. works, committee for' favourable consideration. Mrs. Harris'said that the need for a central rest room had been felt for a long .time, specially as far as country women were concerned. The Womens Division was not at, present strong enough to provide such a building itself, but was ■willing to co-operate. The division hoped to have its own building at : some time in the future/but it was necessary that a building be provided for present needs. The existing rest room was not .central enough. The division intended opening an exchange mart at New Plymouth, Mrs. McPhillips said, and had two suitable buildings in view. If the council could not erect a rest room she asked that it lend financial assistance in renting whichever building was' chosen for the mart. A rest room could then be run on the same premises by the division in connection with the mart. For the present the mart would be open on Fris days and Saturdays, but ultimately it was hoped to open it daily. Mrs. MePhillips thought that £1 or £1 5s weekly from the council would be sufficient help. Cr. F. Amoore thought that the matter should be referred to the works com-, mittee for favourable consideration: The time had come when something should be done. Cr. Amoore' said that he had referred to the matter, before but the council had not seen fit to act. It was suggested that the subsidy of £l7O now allocated to the Plunket rest room might be shared with the division for its room.
