REMOVAL OF TAX UPON GOLD
REQUEST TO THE PRIME MINISTER UNFAVOURABLE RECEPTION MET. By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin; Last Night. A request for the removal of the tax of 12s, 6d per ounce on gold made by the Otago Chamber of Mines was unfavourably received by the Prune Minister (Rt Hon. G. W. Forbes). After referring to the fact that the rise in the exchange rate had given the mining industry a great lift Mr. Forbes gave an assurance that if the rate was reviewed the question raised by the deputation would be considered.. He promised to discuss with the Minister of Mines the possibility of making the tax chargeable on the basis of fine gold instead of the weight of the gold after melting.
