The 61st birthday celebrations of, Wiremu Ratana, the Maori “prophet,” are in progress at Ratana Village, where there is a gathering of about 3000 Maoris. The celebrations this year are of more than the usual importance by reason of the fact that the young Maori King Koroki, with a retinue of 208 followers, is among the guests . Yesterday was occupied with speechmaking, while to-day a sports gathering was held. ' „ , . It is stated that the visit of the king means a great deal, for it signifies a cementing of the tribes from the Waikato district with those in the Wanganui aistrict and in other parts of the west coast.
