KAIMATA SCHOOL WORK
SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Kaimata school committee was held in the school on Friday night, those present being Messrs. J. Klenner (chairman), C. Parker, G. Gibbins, K. Riley, L. Dobson and the head teacher, I. V. Buchanan. The chairman stated that he had interviewed the Education Board about a subsidy to help defray the expense of necessary levelling work in the playground. The board wrote that it did not grant subsidies as it had no funds for the purpose. Members thought the work should be proceeded with, and that the board should be approached again. It was decided to obtain a definite estimate of the cost. The head teacher’s report stated that the epidemic of influenza had abated. A good standard of work had been attained by all classes, and there were no failures in Standard 6. The hildren were practising for the annual concert. Owing to the dry spell the school tank had rim dry, and the children were compelled to carry water from their homes and the. factory for drinking and washing. Mr. Dill-Macky had visited the school that day and judged the entries in the Boys and Girls’ Clubs home garden competition. Mr. Dill-Macky was pleased with the improved standard this season. Both the plots and the books showed that the children were taking a very real interest in their gardens.
Effect of Dry Spell. Kaimata farmers have been making the most of the recent dry spell to hurry on their hay and ensilage making, and some fine crops have been harvested. The pro-
longed dry spell is beginning to have a detrimental effect upon pastures and gardens which are now in need of a good soaking rain. A very large percentage of tanks in the district have run dry, .so that water carting is an extra occupation this season.
