OPUNAKE ITEMS

Mrs. W. A. Sharp has arrived in Opunake and is living in King Street. Mrs. E. L. Thorpe, New Plymouth, is the guest of Mr. T. N. Watt for the week-end. Mesdames Brennan and Fraser, R. J. Morris and Miss Trotter, motored to Wanganui on Thursday, to see the final of the ladies’ golf championships. Miss M. Peebles and Miss M. Major are spending the week-end with Mrs. C. H. Marcroft. Miss E. Fleming, Pungarehu, is the guest of her sister, Mrs. C. O. Edmonds. Several members of the Opunake Tennis Club attended the opening of the Oaonui Club at the week-end. Mesdames Thomas, Parkes, Humphries, Heibner, and Misses' Little and Langton represented Opunake. A successful garden party in aid of the Anglican Church was held in Mrs. Mourie’s garden on Monday afternoon. A leaf-guessing competition was won by Mrs. J. A. Stevenson, Pihama. A. stall in charge of Mrs. A. J. Famell did brisk business. Afternoon tea was served by members of the ladies’ guild. The closing day of the Opunake Golf Club took place on Wednesday when a large crowd was present. Competitions were held during the afternoon and a mixed foursome played over nine holes was won by Mr. E. Craighead and Miss Feaver. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs. G. Feaver, wife of the president, assisted by lady members. Among those present were: Mesdames R. J. Morris, J. Burton, F. Hammond, D. Fraser, C. H. Marcroft, Ewart, D. Thomas, Clements, E. Craighead, C. O. Edmonds, A. J. Brennan, J.. Harrigan, H. Parkes, G. Feaver, Misses Trotter, Feaver, B. Fleming, P. Fleming, Taylor, Q. Sinclair, N. Smith, Jenkin, Mcßeynolds and Hinch. In the evening an enjoyable dance was held in St. Patrick’s Hall. Mesdames R. Jenkin, T, N. Waft, P. Dalrymple and H. Mantey, members of the Opunake Croquet Club, attended the opening of the Park Croquet Club at Hawera on’ Wednesday.

The final night, of the season of the Literary and Debating Society was held on October 13, when there were competitions and musical and elocutionary items. Mrs. Barney’s recitations were appreciated, and a limerick competition caused amusement. Supper was served. Those present were: Mesdames Penn, C. A. Smith, Barney, Marcroft, Dayrymple, T. P. Hughson, L. M. Stephenson, Craighead, Scott; the Misses Thom, Cate, McRae, Lewis, M. Barney.
