TARIFF AGAINST JAPAN
AUSTRALIA CAUSES “FEELING.”
BOARD HEARS EVIDENCE.
By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Sydney, Sept. 23.
Mr. Tanabe, secretary of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce at Sydney, told the Tariff Board that there was danger of the trade relations between Japan and Australia being imperilled if dumping duties were imposed on imports from Japan, where the attitude of the Commonwealth was causing feeling to run high. The chairman, Mr. McConaghy, said that dumping duties had been imposed on other countries at various times and Japan was not singled out for special attention.
Mr. Holt, representing the Chamber of Manufacturers, said that while Japan was at present Australia’s greatest anxiety,* there were other countries from which Australia’s position might be attacked. A fixed rate in the foreign column of the tariff was preferable to a dumping duty on individual countries.
