WOMEN’S INSTITUTES.

Turuturu: At the monthly meeting on Wednesday Mrs. W. H. James presided over a large attendance. Among the visitors were Mrs. W. Kaye, voluntary organiser and president of the provincial federation, Mrs. McAsey (Te Roti), Mrs. Worley (Taneatua, Bay of Plenty), Mrs. Nix (Apiti, Feilding), Mrs. Woods (Inglewood), Mrs, Pearce and Mrs. Ogden (Normanby). Six new members were elected, bringing the membership to 36. Sympathy was expressed with Mrs. A. J. Corrigan in the loss of her father. Appreciation of the services of Mrs. E. Peach, who is leaving the district, was expressed. Mrs. Wilton and Miss Ida Exley were elected to the committee. Mrs. W. H. James, as delegate, reported upon the Dominion conference. Mrs. Kaye spoke on aims and ideals of the institute. During afternoon tea a roll call, “Sing, say or pay,” was held. Huirangi: A number of the women of the Huirangi district met on August 24 to form an institute. Mrs. Morey, Tikorangi, presided and introduced Mrs. Kaye, the organiser for Taranaki. Officers appointed were: President, Miss D. Simpson; secretary, Mrs. S. Osborne; treasurer, Mrs. A. Topless; correspondent, Miss M. Simpson; vice-president, Mrs. Loveridge; committee, Mrs. F. Mace, Mrs. Surrey, Mrs. Honnor and Mrs. Blattler. Visitors present were Mesdames Morey, Hine-and A. Whitehead and Miss Morey (Tikorangi) and Mesdames Stuart and Smith (Inglewood). Mrs. Kaye was thanked for her interesting address Afternoon tea was served by the Huirangi ladies. Te Roti: The monthly meeting was held in the hall on Friday, Mrs. Bloor presiding. A special effort for federation funds took the form of a “bring and buy parcel" not to cost more than 6d, and the competition was for the best 6d worth. After the parcels had been opened Mrs. Collingwood and Mrs. Hodgkinson were asked to make the awards. Mrs. Bloor was placed first with a duster bag, Mrs. Fowler second with an apron made from sugar bags and Mrs. McAsey third with a child’s bonnet and overall made from salt bags. Mrs. McAsey, delegate to the Dominion conference, gave a brief report. Mrs. Bloor and Mrs. Fowler were chosen as the two delegates to attend the halfyearly council meeting at Patea on October 6. A letter was received from Mr. Clutha McKenzie of the Blind Institute thanking the members for a donation to the funas. Mrs. Fowler gave another demonstration in the art of making seagrass stools. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Stokes and McAsey. INSTITUTE BIRTHDAY. GATHERING AT NORMANBY. . The first birthday anniversary of the Normanby Women’s Institute was celebrated by an assembly of over 300 at Normanby on Wednesday night. Mrs. T, J. Allan presided and with her was associated Mrs. J. Kaye, president of the Taranaki Federation. Besides a large gathering of friends of the Normanby members there were present representatives of the Inglewood, Norfolk, Te Roti, Tawhiti, Turi township, Whareroa, Ohawe, Turuturu, Okaiawa, Kakaramea and Okaiawa Maori Institutes, several of whom expressed congratulations to Normanby. The concert programme was an excellent one and the dance most enjoyable, and the whole gathering reflected credit on all those responsible, to whom Mrs. Allan tendered thanks. The report by the secretary (Miss E. Free) on the year’s activities referred to the progress that had been made in increasing the membership from 30 to 96 and in carrying out the activities of the institute. Interesting monthly meetings had been held, at which varied demonstrations had been given. There had also been addresses on many Subjects of interest to women. The social side had also been well catered for, while they had given support to several appeals for deServing causes. They had entertained the pioneers at the Normanby jubilee, and had arranged a display of handcrafts at the institute court at the Hawera winter show. The institute had been represented at two provincial council meetings and at the Dominion conference. Mr. L. O. Hooker offered congratulations on behalf of the visitors and congratulated the women of the district on the work the institutes were doing. The programme was contributed by Mesdames Tozer and Gannaway (songs), Mrs. J. C. Robb (elocutionary items), Messrs A. Galloway and C. L. Hay (vocal duets), Miss Jean McAsey (dances), and Miss C. Mua Carr (pois). There w’as also community singing with Mr. H. Collier as leader and Miss Gwen Chadwick at the piano. Accompaniments were played by Mesdames L. A. Taylor, Franklyn, and Martis, Misses Rodgers and Chadwick, and Piper J. B. Henson. Those in a tableau representing the countries of the British Empire were Misses C. Mua Carr, E. Flintoff, J. McAsey, M. and D. Hopcroft, P. McEwan, D. Slinger and I. Phillips. Two well-acted plays were presented. They were “The Wrong Flat,” played by Misses V. Allan, E. Norfolk, P. Gane, H. Franklyn, E. Free, J. Robb and C. Stewart, and “Captain Cook and the Widow,” in which Mesdames A. J. Hopcroft, J. C. Robb, A. E. McEwan, H. J. Crocker and W. Bennett participated. After the concert supper was served, followed by the cutting of the cakes made by Mesdames Collingwood and Hopcroft. Mrs. C. Cleaver, the oldest member, lit the candle, and Miss E. Flintoff, the youngest member, extinguished it. Mrs. Allan introduced Mrs. Kaye, who expressed the Taranaki Federation’s and her own good wishes to the Normanby Institute. A dance concluded the gathering, music being supplied by Mesdames W. Bennett and H. Martin and Mr. T. Pickering.
