LUSK WINS CHAMPIONSHIP
OPEN GOLFING AT ROTORUA. DEFEAT OF FRYER IN FINAL. By Telegraph—Press Association. Rotorua, Last Night. The Rotorua Golf Club’s open championship was won to-day by H. B. Lusk (Auckland), who defeated F. Fryer (East Coast) 6 up and 5 in the final match, which was played under perfect golfing conditions. It was a triumph for steadiness for the veteran Lusk, who never deviated from his game over the whole distance. Fryer drove a particularly long and accurate ball throughout, but his putting was patchy and this lost him the match. He turned four down at the 18th. and Lusk maintained his game to win comfortably. There was an unusual coincidence during the match when Fryer hit his tee shot at the ninth into a small mud geyser which had erupted in a hazard on the ninth green. He took three to get out and gave up the hole. On the second round in the afternoon he did exactly the same thing, the ball landing in the scape left at the first visit. He again took three and gave up the hole. Lusk was runner-up in the championship last year and will compete in the New Zealand veterans’ tournament which opens here on Tuesday. Record entries have been received for this event, in which veteran golfers in all parts of the Dominion will compete. The Thermal Cup was wbn by the youthful Bulls player N. Amon, who defeated W. Greenbank (Akarana) by one putt on the 36th. after a very close and interesting match.
