ENCAMPMENT FOR BOYS

SCHEME FOR AFFORESTATION. WANGANUI PLAN UNDER WAY. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The Wanganui youths’ afforestation camp, which will be officially opened to-morrow, was conceived and sponsored by the Wanganui District Development League, in co-operation with other local bodies, with a view to providing reproductive work for boys. A splendid site was obtained at Kaitoke, about .four miles from Wanganui, and there an area of 900 acres is available for the work upon chiefly sand-dune country. All foodstuffs and camp equipment have been procured on co-operative lines. The youths are paid 3s a week for pocket money and each receives a r chit for the balance each week. The hutments were purchased from the Public Works Department at £5 each, and .the Unemployment Board made a grant of £2OO. The main building is 50ft by 30ft and electric light has been iristalled. There is a radio for the amusement of the youths. The main building is large enough to permit the scheme being extended to i 200 youths. At the present timel6 hutmeats are in use. There .is a bathhouse fitted'SKjth showers. The aadi’Sgtation scheme will be under the direct control of the State Forest Department. FortV boys are at present engaged preparingyor the nursery which it is proposed to es tablish in order that trees can be growiL in the locality for planting. A considd&ble area of sand dunes will be planted faith marram grass. A feature worth nothing is that some of the youths have already., been drafted out' to permanent with farmers in the district.
