ART UNION PRIZE
RESIDENT OF TANEATUA. SUM OF £3OOO WON. A zress Association cablegram from Sydney on Tuesday evening stated that when the Golden Chest art union for city charities was drawn the .first prize—diamonds worth £3ooo—was won by Mr. George Peebles, of Taneatua, New Zealand. .It was also announced that a New Zealand syndicate, the names of the members of which were not disclosed, had drawn the second prize of £lOOO in the 146th New South Wales State lottery. “This will be a great surprise to George when he hears of it,” said Mr. G. C. Peebles, storekeeper, of Taneatua, father of the winner of the first prize in the Golden Chest art union, when he was communicated with by telephone from Auckland on receipt of the cablegram. Mr. Peebles said he was not aware that his son had taken a ticket in the art union. He was not at home at the time, but his father said he was sure he had not received advice of his good fortune. Mr. George Peebles is an unmarried man, 35 years of age, and assists his father in his general store at Taneatua. He was bom there and was educated at the Auckland Grammar School. He went overseas with the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces and after tire armistice was stationed at Cologne, returning to New Zealand toward the end of 1919. He is a well-known footballer and golfer in the Bay of Plenty.
