FUNDS WASTED IN CIVIC WORK
ALLEGATIONS AT WELLINGTON. VIGOROUS REPLY FROM MAYOR. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The Wellington Chamber of Commerce recently called attention* to “the enormous waste of public funds in the past through the doing of civic work by day labour without prior provision of detailed plans, specifications and estimates.” This has evoked a vigorous reply from the Mayor (Mr. T. C. A. Hislop). Mr. Hislop wrote to the chamber protesting against unproved allegations 1 this nature and asking for informatic ’. He said he knew of no work, with ccwpossible exception, that came under th.; category of the resolution. When the letter was read at to-niglit’.s meeting of the council of the chamber Mr. Stronach Paterson said it was remarkable the Mayor should have fitted the cap so perfectly. The resolution did not refer solely to the city council. If instances were wanted it was only neces-, sary to refer to the Northland tunnel. The president (Mr. A. D. Kerr) remarked that Mr. Hislop had been Mayor only two years; , A sub-committee was set up to draft a reply.
