ALLEGED WASTE IN PAST. CRITICISM OF STATEMENT. A communication issued by the Wellington Chamber of Commerce deprecating “the enormous waste of public funds associated in the past with the carrying out of civic work by day labour without prior provision of detailed plans, specifications, and estimates,” was subject to some criticism at the last meeting of the Wellington City Council. The resolution concluded by urging the council to return to sound and approved methods of..carrying out public works. Mr. P. Fraser, M.P., asked the Mayor whether such a thing had happened in recent years. The Mayor: I can see no reason for accepting a resolution like this. It is dictated by eople who prefer to make charges without going into the accuracy of them. It is a matter for regret that any responsible body should forward a resolution like that without having based it upon ascertained fact”
