KAPONGA GENERAL NEWS

METHODIST CHURCH WORK. The Kaponga Methodist circuit quarterly meeting was held at the residence Of Mr. and Mrs. P. Harding. The Rev. J. R. Nelson presided. The membership returns showed a slight decrease during the quarter, due to removals and deaths. The financial statement showed a small falling off in receipts, due to the winter. The report on young people’s work showed encouraging features, a pleasing aspect being the progress of the Riverlea Sunday School in charge of Mr. John Harding. There are now 30 children attending. A discussion took place on the circuit finances, embracing the possibilities for next year. It was generally realised that additional finance would be required next year and that it might be necessary to consider some in the working of the circuit in order to bring about the desired result. The Rev. E. P. Blamires, director of the Methodist youth work in the Dominion, addressed a gathering of the Sunday school teachers on Thursday. A recent visitor to Kaponga was the Bev. A., H. Scriven, general secretary of the Methodist foreign missions, who was entertained at tea by church members. He gave a lantern lecture on the missionary work in Papua, where he was a missionary for many years. The gathering was arranged in aid of church and missionary work in the Solomon Islands. A sub-committee has been set up to make the preliminary arrangements in connection with the annual, spring flower show, which will be held in September. Mr. W. J. A. Farnell, headmaster of the Kaponga State school, will retire from the teaching profession at the end of the present term owing to ill-health. He has been connected with the education service for nearly 25 years.
