Mr. J. W. (Jerry) Horne, formerly a resident of the Eltham district, died yesterday at Hamilton as a result of wounds received in the Great War. Mr. Horne, who was 40 years of age, was in Waikato hospital for over a year. Flying-Officer C. A. Washer, Royal Air Force, and formerly of New Plymouth, has been recategorised by the Central Flying School from B to A2 (May 6). Flying-Officer Washer, who is stationed at Malta as an instructor to the Fleet Air Arm, was recently in England on six weeks’ leave, during which he qualified for his advancement. The death has occurred at Rotorua of Mr. Edward Quinlan, aged 80, one of the earliest master mariners trading in the New Zealand coastal trade and to Australia, says a Press Association message. With a small crew he sailed the Ladybird, a 21-ton ship, from Newcastle to Wellington, racing a three-masted schooner in a challenge race across the Tasman. After leaving the sea he accepted a position with the Wellingtois Harbour Board and was for many years head signalman at the Queen’s Wharf. Mr. Quinlan had many recollections of the early days of the Union Company, when the service was operated entirely with sailing vessels. — v
