COLLAPSE OF THE STRIKE

RETURN OF RELIEF WORKERS ORIGINAL STRIKERS’ DECISION. HASTINGS GANGS ALL AT WORK. NO FORMAL MEETING HELD. By Telegraph—Press Association. Hastings, July 17. The Hastings relief workers’ strike, the leaders of which have been aiming at converting it into a national strike of unemployed, collapsed this morning after three weeks. Of 750 men eligible for work under the 5A scheme 500 had either gone to work or applied for work by 11 a.m. Gangs are working at many tasks actually in the borough, one being on a job next door to the hall where the strike meetings have been held. The decision to return to work was not made at a formal meeting, but was apparently the outcome of a talk among the men themselves. A later message states that at 1.30 this afternoon approximately 700 relief workers had returned to work or enrolled for the purpose of doing so, leaving about ; 50 yet to hand, in their names. NAPIER MEN RETURNING "TRUCE ONLY TEMPORARY.” REORGANISING FOR STRUGGLE. Hastings, Last NlgEt. The Napier relief workers’ strike in the Napier-Hastings district is over, at least for the time being. The Napier men at a meeting to-night decided to return to work to-morrow “in order to reorganise and reciprocate.” Throughout to-day at Hastings the men have been steadily making application for work, until by late this afternoon practically all were on the jobs. Mr. H. Kay, chairman of the Napier and district Relief Workers’ Association, stated to-night that the men had retired temporarily from the struggle to reorganise, with a view to carrying on the fight at an early date, probably in five or six weeks.
