The Prime Minister, Mr. J. S. Lyons, to-night announced brief details of a big development plan in the Northern Territory of Australia, in conjunction with the British Government with the object of populating large empty areas and at the same time affording protection for the natives. . Two chartered companies, one oi wmen is Vesteys, with immense capital, are prepared to embark on development schemes without delay in return for certain concessions, including a Government guarantee of partial tariff, taxation and other concessions, and assistance in providing transport facilities. Mr. Lyons emphasised that the scheme was intended to be regarded as part, of Empire development plans, including Australian defence, and would help to permit of the maintenance of the “white Australia” policy.
