SUCCESSFUL BALL AT WAITARA.

The plain and fancy dress ball in St. John’s Hall, Waitara, on Thursday under the auspices of the St. John’s Anglican Church was a great success. The ceiling and walls were decorated with streamers, paper flowers, coloured lights and balloons. The supper was served by members of the church guild. Visitors were present from various outlying districts. Those attending in fancy dress were Misses Jones (Early Victorian), Wells (Venetian Pierrette), Nosworthy (19th Century Lady), P. Young (Circus Girl) and Ellis (Lady of the Louis Period), Mrs. Bullen (Courtier), Mrs. St. George (Eastern Princess), Misses Pizzey (Looking on the Bright Side), Jean Callander (Gay ’Nineties), May Callander (Poster), W. Sampson (Toreador), Edna Bird (Poster) and M. Cain (Band Boy), Mrs. Fitzherbert (Puritan Maid), Miss D. Sarten (Early Victorian), Miss Thorne (Early Victorian), Miss B. Rawson (Pierrette), Miss Peat (Early Victorian), Mrs. H. A. Foreman (First Aid), Miss I. Foreman (Early Victorian), Miss L. Pruden (Early Victorian), Mrs. Munro (Scarecrow), Miss B. List (Jazz Pierrette), Miss M. Allen (Picture Fan), Miss Gentles (Old Featured Lady), Miss Hill, (Pierrette), Mrs. Fitzherbert (Charlie’s" Aunt).

The judges, Mrs. Blackley, Miss Gavin and Miss Furness, had no easy task in selecting the prize-winners, who were: Fancy dress, Miss Cain (Band Boy) 1, Mrs. Fitzherbert (Charley’s Aunt) and Miss Nosworthy (19th Century) 2, Mr. H. St. George (Pirate) 1; paper frocks, Misses Thome and B. Peake (Earjy Victorians); advertisement, Miss M. Callander 1, Mr. R. Grant 2; extra prizes, Mrs. Munro (Scarecrow), Mr. J. Ellis (South Sea Islander), Mr. T. G. Fowler (Pearlies), Miss E. Bird (Poster). The prizes were presented by Archdeacon G. H. Gavin.

McNeill's Novelty Dance Band played old-time and modem music. The master of ceremonies were the Rev. H. S. Fussell and Mr. L. H. Sampson. Extras were played by Miss I. Foreman and Mr. R. Grant.
