OPUNAKE BAND BALL

GREAT SOCIAL SUCCESS. PRESENTATION TO MEMBER. The Opunake Band ball on Wednesday evening was well attended and proved a great social success. The financial result also was very satisfactory and a net profit of over £l5 is expected. Bright decorations, coloured streamers and greenery transformed the town hall into a delightful rendezvous, while the supper room was similarly prepared and looked very attractive with vases of flowers set at intervals along the tables. The ladies’ committee in charge of supper arrangements comprised Mesdames R. S. Jenkin, M. Fennell, F. Hammond, W. N. Lee, J. Humphries, G. Short, R. Urbahn, W. Crisp, T. Rikihana, C. Coad, A. Starck, C. Maindonald, R. Ritchie, G. Hooper, R. McCullum and Miss L. Trotter.

Visitors were present from many parts of Taranaki and a number of bandsmen in uniform attended. Procedings opened with a grand march led by Drum-Major G. Short and Mrs. R. S. Jenkin.

The music was played by Mrs. C. Malcolm’s orchestra, and “extras” were played by Miss M. Glengarry, Mr. L. Peer and Mr. D. Muschamp. Competitions resulted: Iced cake (donated by Mrs. G. Hooper); Mr. L. Des Forges; surprise packet, Mr. O. West, Monte Carlo, Mr. G. Mclvor and Miss' Cate; statue waltz, Mr. G. Murfitt and Miss Alehin.

Opportunity was taken to farewell one of. the oldest members of the band, Mr. R. Urbahn, who is leaving to reside at Wellington. Mr. Frank Julian (president) said that both band members and the residents of Opunake were sorry to have to bid farewell to such a good citizen. Mr. Urbahn had stuck to the band all through and was always ready to Help with social functions. They would be losing a good friend, but he was sure their guest would join with a band wherever he made his' home; so others would gain. He presented Mr. Urbahn with a mantelpiece clock as an appreciation from fellow band members. Mr. Urbahn suitably responded.
