RATES LEVIED AS NOTIFIED.

MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL.

Rates of one penny in the £ in each riding as previously notified were made and levied at the monthly meeting of the Waimate West County Council yesterday. The engineer reported that the , work of refacing the lower portion of Rowan Road was finished early in the month. The crushing plant had then been moved to Beacfi Road, where about half the stone that was there had been crushed and spread on the road. The lower Auroa Road had been thoroughly patched with bitumen and shingle, and about tliree chains of this road near the Otakeho Hotel had been re-graded and resurfaced with bitumen. Maintenance work had been done, on tire Manaia, Glenn, Skeet and Auroa Roads, and the new gravel on the lower Glenn Road had been raked in, and rolled. Notification from the health inspector was received of one case of diphtheria at Manaia.

Renewals of slaughterhouse licences, subject to the approval of the department, were granted to J. A. Pettigrew, L. C. Harrison and L. A. Walters. A communication from the Minister of Internal Affairs suggesting that July 19 should be observed as Arbor Day and be made a public holiday was “received.”

Accounts amounting to £1249 Is 5d were passed for payment. It was stated that 463 gallons of petrol were used during the month.

The clerk of the Hawera County Council, Mr. J. W. J. Harding, wrote enclosing copies of correspondence to and from the Minister in charge of the Valuation. Department. There were present at the meeting Crs. J. S. McKay (acting-chairman), T. Mourie, J. Leslie and T. A. Bridge. Extended leave of absence was granted the chairman, Mr. E. Long.
