HAWERA WELSH SOCIETY

FIRST ANNUAL MEETING HELD. GOOD PROGRESS REPORTED. The annual meeting of the Hawera and District Welsh Society was held at Hawera last night. The Rev. H. Whitby James presided over a good attendance. The annual report stated that the society was formed at Hawera on October 11 last. During the past year several successful meetings had been held, including a celebration of Dewi Sant on March 3, when the society entertained two delegates from the Wellington Welsh Society, Mesdames Willman and Webber. An address was given by the chairman on St. David of Wales, and a Welsh ad-. dress was given by Mr. Owen Jones, A letter was received from Lady Bledisloe congratulating the society on its formation, and wishing it success. The Rev. and Mrs. H. Whitby James were the guests of honour at the meeting of the Wellington Welsh Society on May 11, and conveyed the society’s greetings to that body. A dance was held at Hawera ' on June 2. The membership of the society at present was 55. The society had had the pleasure of welcoming visitors from Wellington and New Plymouth during the year. The financial position was satisfactory for the first year of the society’s existence, said the treasurer, Mr. E. Beech. The dance had unfortunately coincided with a long night at Hawera told the St. David’s Day function was free to members. Despite a debit balance they hoped for a considerable improvement in the coming year. , n t The subscription was fixed at 2s od for men and Is for ladies. .-. • Officers elected were: Chairman, the Rev. Mr. Owen Jones gave a welcome in Welsh and Mr. Whitby. James gave a talk on some characteristics of the 'Welsh and the aims of the society. ‘ The meeting was interspersed with items, those contributing being: Songs, Mr. A. E. Morris and Mrs. J. A. Duffill; recitations, Mrs. J. C. Robb; pianoforte solos, Miss Vera Beech; violin solos, Mr. C. Shore. Mrs. Beech played the accompaniments. Supper and a short dance followed. HAWERA WINS BASKETBALL. ANNUAL GAME WITH FEILDING. The Hawera Technical High School basketball team beat the Feilding Agricultural High School side by 18 goals to 10 in the annual match at Hawera yesterday. Very slow.” Injuries to Relief Workers. Two relief workers at Hawera received injuries recently, one by falling ftom a lorry and 'the other by accidentally striking his foot with a pick. Both men are expected to be back at work within week. Wrestlers Matched. “Whiskers” Blake and Gus. Romberg have been matched to wrestle at Hawera on July 26. Pennies Mount Up.
