ODDFELLOWS* LODGE MEETING. HONOUR TO DELEGATE. There, was a good attendance of members at a meeting of the Kaponga Oddfellows’ Lodge on Monday evening. N.G. Bro. N. Young presided. The resignation of the elective secretary, Sister T. Muir, was received with regret. Bro. F. Beresford was appointed to the vacancy and inducted by acting L.M. Bro. A. Gilbert. The lodge’s delegate to the Friendly Societies’ Council, Bro. A. Melville, reported upon matters of interest resulting from the recent annual meeting at Hawera. He had accepted the presidency for a further year. The following degrees were conferred: White, Bro. J. Lawrence; blue, Sister H. Cleaver; scarlet, Bros. C. Marx and J. Carbis; gold, Bro. A. Schicker. The question of holding a further dance in aid of lodge funds was discussed and the matter left in the hands of Bro. A. Gilbert to submit plans to the next lodge meeting. , , . An interesting debate took place in open lodge, the subject being “Should a member receive the white degree on the night of his initiation?” The affirmative was taken by Bro. A. Gilbert, who was mainly supported by Bros. E. W. Snowdon and W. Marr, while the negative was championed by Bro. A. Melville, who had with him Bros. A. H. Burt and T. McMillan.' Bro. C. E. Betts was judge and gave his decision in favour of the negative. Bro. Betts said that the debate had been one of the most interesting held by the lodge. He was agreeably surprised at the standard of the debating, particularly among some of the younger members. The debates were serving a useful purpose and the experience gained would stand the younger members in good stead not only in lodge work but also in everyday affairs. Rifle Shooting Results.

Effort for Relief Funds. -Members of the.. Kaponga Amateur Theatrical Society have been busily engaged for some weeks preparing their novelty musical comedy “Jolly: Good Company,” which will be presented next month. The effort is to raise funds for the local Red Cross relief, depot which gives assistance to all relief workers in the Kaponga district Personal and General.

The concert to have been given at Kaponga by the Hawera Savage Club m aid of local relief funds has been postponed until later in the year. Work under the No. 5 scheme was given last week to three A men, seven B men and four C men, it being standdown week for the remainder. Mr. C. H. Brewer is on a holiday visit to Iris brother, Kawhatau Valley, Mangaweka. j Mr. S. Lissaman, Mrs. Lissaman and Mr. Harry Lissaman are on a brief visit to North Auckland. Mr. A. Shepherd, Riverlea, is at WeiU *Mts?C. West has returned from Hamil--4 Mr. A. Sharland, Wanganui, is taking the place of Mr. Lissaman during his A. Haggas is an inmate of the Hawera hospital. ' . Mr. and Mrs. Cassidy and family, former early settlers of Kaponga, spent a tew days last week visiting old friends in the district. , Messrs. J. and A. Revell, Whakatane, paid a brief visit to Kaponga last week. Mr. W. Brown is in the Hawera hospital.
