PROFESSIONAL WRESTLING

COUNT VARGA—PATTERSON. Joseph Wilhelm Varga, the "monocled man of the ring,” is a Hungarian Count by birth, who commenced his wrestling career as an amateur in a military college. His strength, desire for the game and versatility soon brought him to the front ranks. His first match of importance was against the Rumanian chamiopn, Overetsko. He defeated the champion’ and then went on to a tournament at Fiume, annexing the first prize. Later at Trieste he defeated Tony Mickeluzl, who had previously beaten the Italian champion Gardini. From there he went to Budapest for the European championship, a contest of 40 men representing most of the important countries of Europe. The contest was decided on both Graeco-Roman and catch-as-catch-can styles and the Count contested the final, defeating Ferimz Halubaum. At this point in the Count’s career he set out for America, and his first match was with the original Demetral (William), whom he defeated in two hours five minutes; then a victory over Charlie Fox, heavyweight champion of Ohio, settled all doubts as to the Count’s credentials. He then had one hour’s match with Waldek Byszko, twice heavyweight champion of the world, and the Count was given a points decision at Cleveland. At New York Varga managed to draw with Gus Sonnenberg in a time limit contest lasting 40 minutes without a spell. Count Varga, it is interesting to New Zealanders to know, has scored two victories over Kara Pasha and once defeated Stanley Pinto in New York in 37 minutes. His first match in this Dominion Was at Wellington on June 12, when he defeated Al Pereira before a record house. Count Varga will encounter a real handful on Saturday night at the Coronation Hall, New Plymouth, when he gets to grips with the Irish giant, 16-stone Jack Patterson, of Thunderbolt fame. The box* plan is now open at Chum Roberts, Tobacconist, Devon Street, New Plymouth, where reservations can be made or day sales procured at no extra cost.
