TOUR BY FARMERS

PARTY FROM AUSTRALIA FORTNIGHT'S VISIT IN SUMMER. 1 TARANAKI NOT INCLUDED. New Zealand farming methods and conditions will be studied by a party of Australian farmers who will visit the Dominion in February next. The tour Will be conducted under the auspices of the New South Wales Council of Agricultural Associations, and is under the patronage of the New South Wales and New Zealand Departments of Agriculture.

; The. party is scheduled to reach Wellington by the Monowai from Sydney on Monday, February 5, 1934, for a fortnight’s tour of the Dominion embracing both the South and North Islands. A somewhat similar tour was made by a party of Victorian farmers in February of the present year.

How many will be making the trip is not yet known, but the New Zealand Government Tourist. Bureau in Sydney is now inviting applications from farmers and agriculturists of New ■ South Wales for inclusion in the party. An appropriate itinerary has been drawn up by the. Tourist Department. This will include visits to up-to-date sheep farms, modem dairy farms and tested herds, butter and cheese factories, experimental farms, -freezing works and grading stores, and agricultural colleges. In addition the opportunity will be taken to inspect some of the Dominion’s scenic resorts. INTERCHANGE OF IDEAS. The tour has been organised for ’he benefits.it. will provide by way of opportunities for encouraging and extending agricultural development as a result of the natural interchange of ideas. It is the intention of the party to study existing pastoral and agricultural methods and conditions in this country, and to survey the result of those methods on the farm and from the farm to factories and marketing organisations, and to meet representative agricultural and pastoral interests in the Dominion. It is also felt that such a visit must increase the cordial relationship ■ that already exists between the Dominion and the Commonwealth. The Minister of Agriculture, Hon. C. E. Macmillan, has extended a hearty welcome to the/ farmers of New South Wales who may decide to visit the Dominion next summer. He points out tnat such a visit will be of great advantage in furthering the good feeling already existing between the Commonweal th and New Zealand, and that it will be instrumental in advancing the agricultural interests of both countries. A similar welcome has been extended to the Australian farmers by the Doipinion president of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, Mr. W- J- Polson, M.P., who states that every effort will be made, to make their stay, interesting and enjoyable. South .Wales Minister of Agriculture,. the. Hon. Hugh Main, has given the tour his enthusiastic support. He states that the educational value of such trips cannot ; be over-estimated. He is pleased to learn that arrangements ara being made for a tour through.the lambraising and dairy-farming districts of New Zealand. In wishing those responsible for organising the tour every success, he expresses his willingness to assist the movement in every way. , While in New Zealand the party will be accompanied by officers of the Government Tourist Bureau, who will be responsible for all arrangements. ITINERARY IN DETAIL. Details of the itinerary are as follow: February 5: Arrive Wellington by Monowai from Sydney. February 6: At Wellington. Morning: Visit to Municipal Milk Depot. Afternoon: Sightseeing round the city and bays. Evening: Depart by ferry steamer for Lyttelton. February 7: Arrive Lytteltoh. Morning: Visit Kaiapoi Woollen Mills. Afternoon: Visit Canterbury Freezing Company’s works, (Lincoln College, and experimental sheep farms. February 8: By train from Christchurch to Invercargill. February 9: At Invercargill. Visits to places of local interest and to some of the chief grain-growing areas of Southland. February 10: Invercargill to Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu. February 11: At Queenstown. Sightseeing trips arranged. , February 12: z Queenstown to Durtedin via Central Otago, stops being made en route to visit fruit-growing areas and irrigation schemes. February 13: Dunedin to Lyttelton to connect with steamer in evening for Wellington. " February 14:.Arrive Wellington. Morning- Travel by train to Palmerston North. Afternoon: Visit Massey Agricultural College. Dairy Research Institute, Plant Research Station, and seed-testing areas. Fyening: Depart by train for National Park, thence- to Chateau Tongariro. February 15: At Chateau Tongariro. Sight-seeing trips to various points of interest arranged. „ , February 16: Chateau to Rotorua, motors travelling via Lake Taupo. Stops will be made at Wairakei en route to enable party to visit Geyser Valley and Karapiti Blow Hole. . . February 17: At Rotorua. Sight-seeing trip during day.
