THE RACING DESCRIBED

TARANAKI HORSES CO WELL SUCCESSFUL OPENING DAY. INTEREST IN NEW MACHINE. (By. Wire —Special to News.) Wellington, Last Night. Fine weather prevailed for the opening day of the Wellington winter meeting. The course was heavy and the attendance good, with increased totalisator receipts. The new totalisator indicator worked well and was in great favour with the public. Thurina by Five Lengths. There was not a great deal of pace on in the Matai Steeples until the field was about six furlongs from home, when Fine Acre started to carry the opposition along. Tunbridge and Gueress led for a round with Tunbridge a little in front most of the way. Gueress fell at the fence near the seven furlongs and badly interfered with Thurina. Fine Acre was in front crossing the top from Tunbridge, with Thurina coming again. Fine Acre and Thurina jumped the last fence together and Thurina ran on to win by five lengths, while Tunbridge was only half a length away third with Jen fourth. Quinopal fell at the second fence. Thurina jumped splendidly and may win again during the meeting. He put up a really good performance to win after losing a few lengths when Gueress fell. He had been schooling well at Riccarton during last week and his victory was expected 'by southerners. Tunbridge put up a fine showing for a horse, having his first attempt oyer the big fences. Neither Jen nor Kaokaoroa ever looked likely. Amyril All the Way.

Plaidie and Amyril were in front in the Woburn Handicap and they filled the leading places, drawing right away in the straight. Amyril finished, better and won by half a length. So far were these two in front that the third horse, Colossical, was five lengths back, with Woodful fourth and Red Top, Milnrow, Drumfire and Gold Dress all close up. Amyril won so well that her win--ning turn may not have come to an end yet. She has improved arfot since racing at Foxton and always held Plaidie safe over - the final furlong. Plaidie ran his best race to date but was unlucky to run into a smart hack like the winner. Drumfire was well up at the straight entrance but failed to run on. Won Convincingly.

High Grader won the Vittoria Hurdles from end to end and paid one of 'the shortest prices that has been recorded in a jumping event for a long time. Paleta and Ramuna were prominent all the way and they fought out a great duel for second, Ramuna getting the verdict by a head. High Grader hit one fence , but otherwise gave a great exhibition of jumping and is good. He won by three lengths without much in reserve, but will improve. Vitaphone and Joie de Vai did best of the others. Sir Musk hit the second fence very hard, and lost a good position, but was running on at the end. Paleta’s showing for a horse having his second race over hurdles was a good one. Hounslow was a disappointment, starting to fade out five furlongs from home.. Beacon Fire Finishes Well.

The Tiger began with a great burst of speed in the Stewards’ Handicap and led on to the course proper from Royal Hunting and Beacon Fire, who shot through at the false rail and went on to win by three lengths from Merry Peel, who finished well from the ruck and beat Royal Hunting by half a length. The Tiger was a close fourth, with Glenvane fifth. The Tiger had every chance but did not finish well enough to hold his place. However, he was far' from being disgraced. Glenvane was not prominent early but was running on well enough at the finish. He had too much ground to make up. Omeo at Last.

The New Plymouth-owned Omeo scored a clear-cut victory in the Wellington Steeplechase. This time he jumped well throughout and, aided by his light weight, he had the race in hand a long way from home. High Pitch and Omeo were the leaders passing the stand on the first round, arid they were still in command entering on the final circuit. Billy Boy had moved into third place at that stage and was going well. After him came Callamart, Luna Lux and Make Up, with Valves last. Luna Lux and Billy Boy challenged Omeo at the big brush fence about six furlongs from home, but he jumped away from them. Billy Boy had had enough before the straight was reached and Make Up was being urged along to keep near the leaders. Luna Lux challenged in the run home but Omeo won. by five lengths, with Make Up eight lengths away third. Callamart was fourth, Billy Boy fifth, High Pitch sixth and- Copey last. Valves fell. It was a fine contest with all honours to the winner. Jumping and galloping in great style, he brought his exasperating run of ill-luck to an end. He is trained at Awapuni by L. Knapp, who also won the Great Northern Steeplechase with Callamart, who was fourth to-day. Luna Lux ran right up to his reputation and beat the others easily. He was unlucky to meet the winner on one of his best days. Make Up was a moderate third and Callamart and Billy Boy found their burdens too great. Copey was a big disappointment and was never dangerous.

Surprise Win. Adventus led the Trentham Hurdles field from end to end. Paddon and Solanio attempted to go with him in the first half of the race, but he beat them off. Solanio was soon done with and Paddon was beaten at all the jumps and finally nearly fell at the last. Adventus was five lengths clear at the winning post from Gold Knight, who finished well, while Membo just cut Paddon out of third money. Henry of Navarre and Solanio followed. High Falutin’, who was heavily backed, fell at the first hurdle and was lame afterwards.

Curie’s Easy Win. Curie made no race of the Whyte Handicap. Lady Spy was first out, but Curie was always handy and led into the straight from Lady Spy, Little Doubt, Water Power and All Humbug. All Humbug made desperate efforts to get to Curie in the straight, but Curie held him off and won easily by a couple of lengths, with Lady Spy only half a head away third. Water Power, Little Doubt, Protomint, Cylinder and Town Major did best of the others. Gibraltar, Protomint and Stanchion were badly left. Protomint afterwards ran a particularly good race. Zeebrugge ruptured a suspensary ligament when going "\yell on the home turn and was pulled up.

Ida Merling Draws Away. A fair amount of Taranaki money went on March Alone in the Te Aro Hack Handicap, but he began slowly and was never a possibility. Ida Merling and Swift and Sure were always in front and in the straight Ida Merling drew away to win by three lengths, while Swift and Sure was well clear of Heather Glow, with High Speed, Shoot-

ist and West Tor next. The first .and second horses should run promineptly again next time out. Kotaki Eka whipped away from the barrier and took no part in the race. Cardinal Moon was badly left.
