GUIDE AND BROWNIE BIRTHDAY. The Kaponga troops of Girl Guides and Brownies last week celebrated their fifth birthday, when the Guide cortl- . mittee entertained them at tea in the ' parish hall. There was an attendance t of between 50 and 60 Guides and Brownies. Also present by invitation were Mrs. D. Steven (Stratford), District Commissioner, District Captain C. Free, Brown Owl E. Free, Tawny Owl ’ Baker (Hawera), and Mrs. T. N. Watt ‘ (Opunake). In the unavoidable absence 1 of the president, Mrs. J. Hessell, a welcome was extended to the visitors by ’ Mrs. J. I. R. Gray, who said they were • very pleased on the most look-forward- ’ to evening in the Guide year to have the ' visitors with them. She hoped the ■ Guides would during the coming year strive to be even better Guides than last year. Mrs. T. N. Watt briefly re- . turned thanks on behalf of the visitors. Tea was provided by the parents of Guides and Brownies and served by . members of the Guide committee. Occupying a prominent position at each . end of the long tables were two birthday cakes, one the gift of the guide captain, Miss I. Melville, for the Guides, and the other .given by Mrs. C. H. Brewer, for the Brownies. All present were given a piece. After tea a musical programme was given, also a display of Guide work and games, the camp fire, which is a familiar scene on such occasions, being carried out with good effect. A comi petition for adults entitled “Guide L Chairs” was won by Mesdames Stevens and Dawson. ’ Flag 500 Evening. The night of the series of flag five hundred tournaments conducted during the , months by the social committee of the Anglican Church took place in the parish . hall on Tuesday evening when in spite i of the unfavourable night 28 players attended. The winners were Mesdames T. T. Jones and C. H. Brewer, and Messrs. ’ R. Kivell and C. H. Brewer senior. Following supper provided by the lady members of the guild, the floor was cleared for a short dance programme for which music was provided by Miss I. Guppy and Mr. J. Austin, while Mr. R. t S. Herbert was master of ceremonies. Personal. ’ Mrs. Steele, Oamaru, is visiting Ka- • ponga, staying with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. O. E. Champtaloup. Messrs. J. M. Gardner and N. Hudson are on motor tour of the Auckland, Waikato and Rotorua districts. ‘ TOKAORA DISTRICT NOTES. L ! TALK ON HOCKEY RULES AND PLAY 1 Mr. W. J. Shepherd, a prominent Hawera hockey enthusiast, gave an interest1 ing lecture on the rules of the game in J the Tokaora Hall this week. There.was a good attendance of members of both the men’s and ladies’ teams and those ’ present availed themselves of the opportunity to question the lecturer upon ' points of individual difficulty. Mr. Shepherd also dealt with many of the finer 1 points of the game, illustrating his re- ’ marks with figures on a miniature hoc- ’ key field. There was quite a good attendance of ’ local residents at a meeting held on ' Tuesday to discuss hall finance. It was ’ explained by the chairman of the guarantors, Mr. W. Standish, that, although ! excellent progress had been made in re--1 ducing the overdraft during past years, local interest in the hall appeared to be waning. Consequently the prospect of • wiping out the overdraft at the bank was becoming more remote. As the bank was pressing the guarantors, the speaker considered that a determined effort should ■ be made by settlers in the district to rei duce the liability; After much discussion t it was agreed to hold a monster bazaar > followed by a dance sometime in July - and a committee was set up to finalise • arrangements. , The usual fortnightly euchre party and , dance was held in the hall on Thursday • evening. There was a particularly good , attendance and the function proved most enjoyable. The euchre winners were: Men, Messrs. R. Scown 1, T. Bollond 2; ladies, Mrs. S. Thrush 1, Mrs. Jordan 2. Music was supplied by Mr. Smith, assisted by Mrs. • Joyce , Mr. F. Stewart and Mr. Macdonald. Miss W. M. Hall, who was recently appointed additional assistant at the Toka- : ora school, has commenced duties. > . 1 FAREWELL TO ELECTRICIAN. i ! MR. W. R.
