OPUNAKE GENERAL NEWS

SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETS. The monthly meeting of the Opunake school committee was held on Thursday night there being present: Messrs. S. Boyd (chairman), J. Johnstone, T. Rikihana, R. Wilihan, W. D. Richards, C. Humphries, L. Brown, W. L. Sharrock (secretary) and H. Burgess (headmaster). The headmaster reported the roll number and average attendances for May as follows: Secondary roll 36, average 31.1; primary roll 186, average 172. Eleven pupils were admitted and four withdrawn. During the school holidays some very useful display frames were erected in each room. A piano has been purchased to replace the old one in the primary department. After consistent attempts by the brother lodge, Opunake 1.0.0. F., New Zealand, to form a sister Rebekah lodge success was crowned by the institution by lodge Naumai 73. Thirty-two members were installed by the D.D.G-M. and the lodge duly was instituted. The officers of the Naumai lodge installed, were: N.G. Sister M. E. Gilshman, V.G. Sister B. A. Julian; Sisters B. A. Wan, treasurer and secretary, B. N. Perry. It was decided at a preliminary meeting to form a literary and debating society in Opunake. There was a good attendance at the Catholic euchre party in St. Patrick’s hall on Thursday night. The ladies first prize was won by Mrs. D. Harrop, Mrs. J. Read being 2nd. The men’s prizes were won by Mr. B. Coneglan 1, and Mr. J. Morris 2. PATEA PERSONALS. Mr. John Walton’has returned from Hawke’s Bay. Mr. M. Carey and Mr. C. Masters have Left on a visit to Auckland. Mr. Colin Browne, of Springvale, Wanganui, was a recent visitor to Patea. Mr. Melvyn Crawford, Whenuakura, is spending a holiday at Auckland. Mr. G. Pettigrew has returned from Wellington. Mr. W. Bird, of the Patea post office staff, has received notice of his transfer. to Carterton. Mr. Ben Currie left yesterday on liis annual leave. Mr. J. Jackson is visiting Patea‘from Wellington. PERSONAL ITEMS. After a lengthy illness the ( death- occurred in Hawera yesterday of Mr. F. T. (Frank) Brown at the age of 57 years. Mr. Brown, who was . well known in South Taranaki, was a member of the staff of Newton King Ltd., previously having been in the employ of Messrs. Bennett and Sutton. While resident at Eltham some years ago Mr. Brown was prominent in football circles, playing for. the club’s senior team and eventually gaining representative honours. In later years he took a keen interest in the coaching of various teams in the district, being associated with the Athletic and Whareroa clubs prior to their disbanding. He was also a member of the Park (Hawera) Bowling Club and the Eltham Manchester Unity Lodge. He leaves a widow, a son and three daughters—Mrs. F. C. Brown (Hawera), Mrs. T. Jones (Hawera),. Mrs. J. Dill (Midhirst) and Miss D. Brown. Mr. H. S. Maslin (Hawera) is a brother-in-law. Mr. E. R. Greenfield, representing Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, arrived at Hawera yesterday to arrange for the forthcoming presentation of uie film “Grand Hotel.”

Mr. H. Raine, of the Hawera branch of the Bank of New Zealand, has been appointed accountant at the Eltham branch. Miss E. J. Gallagher, sister of Mrs. B. C. Bennett, of Hawera, died at Wellington on Thursday. GENERAL ITEMS. Post Office Repairs. Workmen are at present engaged making slight alterations to the main entrance to the Hawera post office.

Relief of Unemployed. Food rations were supplied to 46 families by the Hawera Citizens’ Relief Committee yesterday, parcels being made up according to the size of the family. The total quantity of foodstuffs supplied was 231 b of tea, 1881 b of .sugar, 1001 b oatmeal, 2801 b flour, 60 bread coupons and 481 b butter.

Everest Climbs Explained.' An explanation of the attempts to ascend Mount Everest including previous assaults was given -y. Mr. Rod Syme to the Mount Egmont Alpine Club- on Thursday. His, remarl served to make the cables more intelligible. Point was lent by the display of some excellent photographs reproduced by the Times (London) which were lent by the Rev. H. W. James. HAWERA OPERA HOUSE. “SMILIN’ THROUGH” MATINEE. Leslie Howard became a “man with three faces” for his role in “Smilin’ Through,” Norma Shearer’s new starring film which will open at the matinee today at the Hawera Opera House for a three-night season. Howard’s role takes him through the stages from youth, middle age and old age in this drama of love struggling against hate. Norma Shearer and Fredric March also play dual roles in “Smiling’ Through,” making this 'one of the most unusual pictures ever screened. A limited number of comic papers will be given to children attending the matinee.
