The announcement is made by the management of the Hawera Opera House of the eagerly awaited screening of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s film “Grand Hotel,” which commences a short season of three days only, next Wednesday. This picture, of which the London critics were unanimous in their praise, proved so successful at Auckland and Wellington that in each case the season had to be extended. * 1 Wellington capacity houses throughout the week resulted in the season breaking all records for the past four years, while an even bigger season at St. James, Auckland, showed the biggest receipt since “Gold Diggers of Broadway.” Hawera is fortunate in securing this stupendous attraction direct from. Wellington. Everywhere in London, Sydney, Auckland and Wellington, the advance bookings have been □ heavy that hundreds have been turned away for the opening and following nights. In London, thousands of seats had been booked for several weeks ahead before the season even opened. Patrons are advised that owing to the heavy bookings of the film the season cannot be extended, and it would therefore be wise to secure reservations early. No extra charge is made for booking. Box plans open to-day at the Opera House. Incidentally it is not a picture suitable for children. Based on the Vicki Baum novel, “Grand Hotel” brings to the screen the most astounding, galaxy of stars and players ever seen in a motion picture. Each of the five principal roles is filled by an outstanding screen star. The exotic Greta Garbo . plays the Russian dancer Grusinskaya, who lives on the acclaim of her audiences and is ready to die when they no longer applaud. John' Barrymore plays the impecunious nobleman whose love for the dancer prevents him from turning thief. Joan Crawford is cast as the seductive stenographer who is willing to sell herself for whatever she is worth to the industrial magnate Preysing, portraying by Wallac Beery. And Lionel Barrymore plays the provincial bookkeeper, Kringelein, who, broken in health, spends his hoarded savings to enjoy his last days in the splendour of the Grand Hotel. Lewis Stone and Jean Hersholt head the supporting cast. The lives of these strangely different characters are drawn together in the .ortex of the fashionable Berlin hotel and the result is a fascinating dramatic panorama In which love, intrigue, murder, comedy and tragedy all play a part
