FIERCE FOOTBALL AT NICE
‘GAME’ WITH ENGLISH TEAM POLICE CALLED ON FIELD PROTEST AGAINST FRENCH ALLEGATION OF SLAUGHTER By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 10 p.m. Paris, May 26. Astounding scenes at Nice characterised the match of the Wolverhampton Wanderers against the Olympic Gymnastic Club. Half an hour after the kick-off the Wolves protested against their opponents kicking, tripping and fouling, whereupon directors and officials went on to the field and separated the teams. The police were called in to maintain order. The Wolverhampton manager finally called his team off the field. The directors of the Nice Club, fearing that the spectators would riot if the match was not continued, persuaded the Wolverhampton players to return, but disturbances continued and time was called ten minutes too early. The Wolverhampton manager says he had never seen such “slaughter,” and that he would never take a team to France again.
