THE BROOKSIDE OFFERING.

TYPE AND QUALITY. The line of 21 in-calf heifers that is ’peing submitted on behalf of Mr. A. E. Western, of the Brookside Stud, Bell Block, at the Joint Jersey Cattle Sale at Mr. F. W. Cornwall’s property, Bell Block, on Wednesday, will certainly bear inspection from every angle. Mr. A. E. Western has a quarter of a century’s association with the Jersey, both in South Taranaki and in North Taranaki, and has met with outstanding success in the show ring, both at New Plymouth, Hawera and Stratford. Last year, with Linden Grove Daphne, the secured three fit sts and two reserves. R. L. Hora, and Sons’ great cow Braeside Dawn was the winner. At Stratford, however, Linden Grove Daphne was placed ahead of Braeside Dawn, the. Royal winner as a dairy cow. All the cattle are in good nick. The four- cows under test this year'show that two of . them. Brookside Peggy and Brookside Lady Aster, will do over 600 lb of fat this year 'as two-year-olds, which is a tribute to Mr. Western’s judgment .. ‘Y-

Mr. Western started on the right lines, his. foundation cows being Mahoe’s Bilberry, introducing the great Bilberry strain, Victoria VI. and Amity, two cf H. E. .8.. .Watson’s well-known cows, bringing in the K.C.8., Monopoly, Primrose strain. His first bull was Star o' Doon, who traces five-times to K.C.8., as well as to Monopoly, bred by H. E? B. Watson. His next bull, was Victoria’s Noble, bred much on the same lines, his sire being Maori-Exile, of the same family of the late H. B. Lepper’s champion cow Elf’s Beauty, who had a C.O.R. record of ,8001 b of . fat. Then he Introduced his herd sires from, the famous Ku Ku. Stud; .when the Owler of Puketapu stain engaged a well-deserved reputation for both type and.production. He has procured three bulls from that stud, and ■ three of the cows under test are from ope of them, Lakeside Aster’s Owler, tyro of them ■ being Brookside Peggy and Brookside-Lady -Aster, both of whom will do 6101 b fat.'- They are’also great .show cows. Indeed, Mr. Western considers that this bull has left the best cows on -the -farm.' '■ ‘ /’. • ' ’ .. .■ All the heifers that are being submitted to auction are by two of Mr. Horn’s well-known bulls. One is Ku Ku Prince CJwfer, an outstanding breeding bull,’who leaves ’ beautiful type and great dairy ability. He has won many prizes, includ- ‘ ing a 100 guinea cup, with two daughters in milk. He is by Owler of Puketapu, champion butter-fat bull with 20 C.O.R. daughters, some up to 7151 b of fat, while his dam. is. Ku Ku Princess, a grert show cow, as well as the dam of prizewinners and C.O.R. cows. . The other bull is Ku Ku Master Owl,, by the same sire and bred oh similar lines. This is the largest sale that Mr. A. E. Western has ever had. His only reason for holding the sale' at present is that he has. too many. to . keep. All the in-calf heifers have . been served by Brookside Master Owl, by Ku Ku Master Owl—-Brookside Double Aster. He will be on view the day of the sale. He is a very typey animal, having taken third prize in a strong class of yearlings at the 1932 New Plymouth show, whilst he gets his butter-fat backing from such bulls as the champion but-ter-fat sire Holly Bank Squire, and Aster’s Golden Laddie. Each of the 6001 b Cows is represented by a heifer at the sale. Brookside Lady Aster by Brookside Audrey. This wellbred daughter is fully expected to make a namp for herself and for the stud. Brookside Peggy is represented by Brookside Peggy O’Neill by Brookside Naradis Admiral, who is bre<h direct from the noted Monopolists, Primrose and Victoria family. Her dam is regarded by experts as the .best in the fair.
