BUTER-FAT RECORDS.

PUKEPAPA STUD MEDALLISTS. The hall mark of butter-fat production has certainly been achieved by Mr. H. Cole with his noted Pukepapa stud, as his record of gold, silver and bronze medals proves. Indeed, he will probably this year have the unique distinction of having bred two double' gold medallists. Already one of his cows has achieved the double distinction of having secured both the silver and gold medal; whilst a second is well on the way to achieving that distinction. The first double, medallist was that noted cow Tulip’s Minta May, which gave 6601 b of butter-fat as a two-year-old,' being the silver medallist of that year. The following year she gave 744 lb and secured the gold medallist honour. As a mature cow she had averaged over 901 b of butter-fat per month for four months, when unfortunately Mr. Cole lost her. Three of her daughters, as well as several direct descendants, are in the catalogue. The first is a six-year-old, Pukepapa Shirley May by Snow View Royalist. Her record was 6061 b fat as a junior two-year-old, and 6741 b as a four-year-old. At present she is under test and is doing remarkably well.; In fact she has hardly ever been dry., Two of her daughters are by Besses Noble- Prince, who is a double grand-son of that great imported bull Viola’s Golden Laddie, whilst, of course, there is the famous Primrose fainily on the dam’s side. ' Both these young cows should be placed under test.' '?• I; ' .■;(* '■ "■

Another daughter of Tulip’s Nunta May is Pukepapa Princess ’May, one of the best looking cows in the herd. 'She has done well under OH.T., but should certainly be tested under C.O.R. condi-. tipns by her new owner. Her next daughter is Pukepapa Ruby "May by the champion butter-fat bull Goodwood Rupert. According to experts she is. one of the finest looking cows in the Dominion. With butter-fat on both sides she cannot help but produce, and as a jiinior two-year-old -last year she produced 594 lb fat in 359 days, securing the silver medal, • whilst this year she has gone straight on and so far has produced 530 lb-fat, or 11201 b of fat milking continuously and treated under ordinary herd conditions. She looks 'like being the senior two-year-bld gold medallist this year, and if so there will bethe unique record of a mother and daughter each holding two medals. Her; eighteenmonths heifer, by Vagabond' df Oaklea, is a picture, and looks like being the best that Mr. Cole has yet bred. Waipapa Tracey is another great producer,? with a record of 700.951 b fat on three quarters. Her daughter, Nanita, by Lyngby Niels, a son of Tiki’s Twylish, is carrying on the good work. In fact she is going even better because last year she produced 816.381 b fat, and was the bronze medallist and was alto awarded a special gold medal. Pukepapa Harmony is of the same family as Tulip’s Nunta May, and her performance illustrates again what a great, dairy family it is. She is how under test, and by the fed of this month as a four-year-old will have’ produced 620 lb fa£ Moreover she is a very handsome cow, and would make gopd in the show ring. The Prim’s Maid family is represented 'Ey two daughters, including Prnn’s Dairy, Maid, by Swastika’s Conqueror. Her daughter, Pukepapa Milkmaid, by Besses Noble Prince, produced 4041 b under O.H.T. at- her second calving, and as a four-year-old .is now under test. She has produced 5601 b of fat to the end of the month unfinished. A daughter, Pukepapa Maid of the Mist by the great bull Santa Rose Golden -Patch,-who has the famous Ivondale strain in his blood, is a very handsome heifer showing great promise. Takapu May, by Takapu Prince —Takapu Beauty is regarded by Mr. Cole as the best tow in his herd. She is a beautiful type, and produced . 4841 b of fat as a junior two-year-old in a remarkably dry year. She has milked 60 lb per day this year, and is still giving 351 b of milk each day. All the cows are easy to milk, and should do well in the show ring. This is the first sale that Mr- Cote has had, as in the past he' has been culling and keeping only the best of proved butterfat strains. As he has so many young stock coming on he is compelled to reduce his herd, thus providing an opportunity that breeders should seize. The twenty-eight cows have been served by the herd sire Crestdate Merry Morning, who is by a son of Goodwood Rupert out of Golden Merry Viola. The four bulls are a choice selection by Crestdale Ringmaster, a son of Goodwood Rupert. One is out of Waipapa Tracey, and the second is out of Brixton Lass, a full sister to Tulips Minta Maid. The third is out of that great producing cow Pukepapa Harmony, whilst the fourth is out of Pukepapa Shirley May, a daughter of Tulip’s Minta May, so that he has a double medallist for a grand dam and a probable double medalist for a dam. Mr. Cole’s offering Of twenty-eight cows and four bulls should prove a great attraction to breeders at the combined Jersey Cattle sale to be held at Mr. Truby King’s property, Waitara, on Thursday next On Monday, also, at the National Sale, Mr. H. Cole’is offering an outstanding heifer, Pukepapa Golden Dawn, by CreSdale Romeo, who is by the champion but-ter-fat bull Goodwood Rupert, out of Comely of Rosy Creek, whose sire was Belvedere Sun Prince, another champion butter-fat bull. The dam, Pukepapa Dawn, is by Besses Noble Prince, a double grandson of the imported Viola’s Golden Laddie.
