A. Black (New Plymouth) qualified for. the finals of the 220 and 440 yards. The coast athletes regard the chances of success to-morrow With mixed feelings as there is strong opposition from all quarters. Newall (Hawera) and Black were scratched, for the 120 yards hurdles and *lOO yards -respectively. ’ Black did not appear to concentrate in the 220 yards heat and let Macfarlane (Canterbury) lead him by four yards. Black’s time was 4-ss. slower than the winner’s, but he qualified for the final. Rumours of an unorthodox style’ by the. Coleman brothers (Eltham) caused the judge to watch the half-mile walk closely. He followed the . race on a bicycle. After. Driscoll (Wellington) and S, C. F. Barraclough (Opunake) was somewhat handicapped in the. pole vault as lie did not bring his own pole. He could hot get used to the tWp poles, he borrowed, one being too heavy and the other too light He was satisfied with his actual jumping and gave way to Batstone and Mulvey (Canterbury), who vaulted magnificently. With mammoth strides over the last. 220 yards Jim Barnes (Otago; and New Zealand cross - country champion) snapped the mile championship with ease. His win was the most* sensational’■ of the day, for he gathered:-up a margin of 15 yards from the bunched field in the final’ lap.'
