HEARING OF CIVIL CLAIMS. ■j l Judgment was given for plaintiff by default in the case of the Taranaki Hospital Board v. Thomas Robertson £39 6s 7d (costs £4 Is 6d), by Mr. W. H. Woodward, S.M., at the Opunake Court yesterday. In judgment summons C. Markham, who did not appear, was ordered to pay R. E. Peat £l5 6s and costs £1 Is forthwith, in default 14 days’ imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended on payment of 10s per week. A. J. Barker, who appeared and was examined, was ordered to pay £l9 Bs, together with £1 Is costs, to I. J. Bridger forthwith, the warrant to be suspended on payment of £1 a month. A farmer, J. H. Magee, was charged on the information of Mr. C. P. Smith’, for whom Mr. Berryman appeared, with .failing to pay his unemployment levy. Mr. Berryman stated that defendant had paid the first two -instalments of the levy but had since defaulted. He had made application for exemption but on receiving, the forms to fill in had not completed them so that the application had lapsed. He had stated that his financial position was such that he had been unable to pay and that his wife was seriously ill in hospital. A friend had arranged to pay the arrears. The penalty .was deferred for a month until it was known whether the arrears had been paid.
