HAWERA SCHOOL SWIMMING

ANNUAL SPORTS MEETING HELD. WARM SUNSHINE AT BATHS. Glorious sunshine flooded the municipal baths yesterday afternoon for the annual swimming sports of the Hawera Main School. Over 100 boys from the Hawera High School, at present encamped on the showgrounds, marched through High Street yesterday afternoon, led by. the school’s military band. The steadiness and general turn-out of the cadets showed the value of the training they have been undergoing. After, marching through the town, the company paid a tribute to the soldiers’ memorial. Beacon Light Defect. A tube of the Hawera Beacon memorial on the water-tower burnt out during the week, and a neighbouring tube was temporarily disconnected in consequence. The trouble was remedied by the service officer yesterday. Alpine Beach Party. An enjoyable evening at the beach was spent by members of the Mount Egmont Alpine Club on Thursday evening. A swim in the surf was followed by tea, and a ramble round the rocks passed the time pleasurably.J “We Beg to Decline.” There was a general disinclination to hold office by members of the Patea Golf Club at the annual meeting on Thursday. Almost without exception each nominee rose and begged to decline. Considerable amusement was caused when, after eulogistic reference to their services had been paid and their election for a further, term proposed, both secretaries, who were seated side by side, rose simultaneously and begged to decline in perfect unison. The perfect timing of the unrehearsed incident provoked much merriment, and the secretaries were elected without any consideration of their pleas. Abundance of Feed. Referring to the amount of grass coming away since the recent rains, Mr. C. R. Honeyfield, president of the Patea Golf Club, told the annual meeting that the opening day must be postponed on that account. At present there were 15 sheep to the acre on the property, he said, and they could not keep the grass down. The regularity of the showers had produced an amazing growth. Crossing Collision. On the inquiry at the Hawera hospital last night it was reported that Mr. D. F. W. Maclean, who was injured in a crossing smash at Normanby on Thursday, was still in a serious condition. He had partially regained consciousness but the extent of his injuries had not been ascertained. More Street Lights. The Hawera Chamber of Commerce last night supported the suggestion of the Retailers’ Association that additional lights should be placed in Princes Street near George Syme and Co.’s mill and in Union Street near Wellington Street and the intersections of Victoria and Argyle Streets with High Street. The lights were recommended by the sergeant of police and the nightwatchman. PATEA PERSONAL ITEMS. The Rev. Godfrey, of the Melanesian Mission, was a visitor to Patea yesterday. The Rev, J. Common, who has been suffering ill-health and has been granted 12 months leave of absence, left on a health recruiting trip yesterday. He will be replaced by the Rev. Wilson. Mr. T. E. Roberts is spending a holiday in Wellington.

* PATEA GOLF CLUB. NEED FOR NEW MOWER. The first meeting of the new committee of the Patea Golf Club discussed several proposals on Thursday for the improvement of facilities for the forthcoming season. Mr. ■C. R. Honeyfield presided. In a discussion on the question of reducing greenkeeping costs the purchase of a motor mower was favoured. By the use of a powered mower cutting a 14 or 16 inch swathe considerable improvement to the greens and the fairways would result, it was stated, in addition to the saving of time and labour. It was decided to obtain specifications of medium weight mowers, and consider the proposal when fuller information is available.

Mr. Glenny suggested some remedial measure was necessary to remove the congestion at the links on Wednesday afternoon. Although it was regarded as ladies’ day, he said, there were a number of members whose only weekly holiday was on Wednesday, and their attendance resulted in crowding. He thought that by the addition of three holes the crowding would be reduced to some extent. A plan to improve the links was outlined by the Rev. Father Hagerty, who in recommending the addition of three new greens suggested their location. If given effect to, he said, the variety of shots would be increased, thereby adding to the interest and popularity of the course and an improvement to the player’s game. The proposal received unanimous support, and a meeting will be held on the ground to consider the details. It was mentioned that the improvement to the course might result in tournaments that would prove attractive to other clubs in Taranaki. Messrs. Hughes, Honeyfield and Hegarty were appointed a greens committee, and Messrs. E. Harris, Gilbert and ■ Wither a handicap committee. SWIMMING CLUB NIGHT. BLYTH AND RYAN TIE FOR CUP. J. Blyth and Ryan tied for the senior cup as a result of last night’s 200 yards race at the Hawera Swimming Club’s weekly meeting. Results are:— 25 yards junior girls: J. Anderson 1, G. Bernard 2, N.
