ANNUAL FLANNAGAN CUP RACE.

TABOR SHIELD FOR SURF CONTEST.

There will be more than the usual activity among surf club members at the New Plymouth beaches this week-end. The annual long distance swim for the Flannagan Cup will take place this afternoon, and to-morrow at Fitzroy the annual championships for senior and junior teams affiliated to the Taranaki Surf Association will be held throughout the day. The Flannagan Cup is to be swum from a point off Kawaroa Park, New Plymouth, to the East End beach, a distance of approximately one and threequarter miles. Twenty swimmers, members of the Wanganui, Hawera, Stratford, Opunake, Inglewood, East End, Fitzroy and New Plymouth clubs, have entered, including H. St. George (Fitzroy), J. Blyth and A. Ryan (Hawera), A. Robson (Stratford), J. P. Carde (Wanganui) and B. S. Dudley (Opunake). There are two lady swimmers, Miss K. Donald (Hawera) and Miss K. Skipper (New Plymouth). Additional handicaps for the race are: Four minutes, D. Burton (Opunake) and J. P. Carde (Wanganui); sm, B. S. Dudley (Opunnake), R. Winter (Inglewood). The race will commence from the Harbour Board. pilot launch, and the swimmers will be followed by other launches containing selected life-savers from the New Plymouth surf clubs. Arrangements have been made for a surf competition at East End between Fitzroy and East End junior teams for the Moles-Mclsaac Cup. The Fitzroy team will be L. Charters (capt.), L. Bennett, A. Standring, L,. Riley, B. Hunter, N. Elmes and E. Main. A senior lifesaving team will be on patrol when the competitors have passed the buoy, and are swimming through the breakers to the finishing tape. LIFE-SAVING CHAMPIONSHIPS. It is expected that Old Boys, Fitzroy, East End and Opunake Surf Clubs will all have senior and junior teams in the life-saving championships at Fitzroy tomorrow. The senior competition is for the Tabor Shield, held by Old Boys, an eight-man event with a stand-off: captain and a draw for positions. The juniors will contest the Pennant, also held by Old Boys,’ a seven man competition, fixed positions, with the reelsman acting as captain. The morning programme will commence with the Tabor Shield land drill, to be followed by the Pennant competition, and the afternoon’s display will begin with a grand march past of all teams, to be followed by the Tabor Shield water work. The Taranaki water polo team which is to take part in the New Zealand championship polo competition at the national swimming meeting at Napier will leave by car to-morrow momning and will play Auckland on Monday in the first match. Owing to the inability of H. J. Thomas to make the trip the team will be: W. Toomey; C. Maclean, C. Evans; W. Kivell; G. S. Anderson (Hawera), A. Ryan, R. Crossman.
