HAWERA ITEMS

Mrs. B. C. Bennett is visiting her sister in Wellington.

Mrs. Bock, of Lower Hutt, is visiting Hawera, and is Mrs. Johnstone’s guest at Okaiawa.

Miss May Wilson is on a holiday visit to Mr. and Mrs. Archie Cameron, Auckland.

Miss Constance Reilly, who has been spending several weeks’ holiday in Sydney, returned to Wellington last week, and after spending a few days with friends in the city arrived in Hawera last week-end.

Miss Joyce Beale, of New Plymouth, is visiting friends in Hawera for the croquet tournament. Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Corrigan left on Thursday morning on a tour of the North Island. They expect to be several weeks away.

Mrs. J. Haynes, who has been visiting her mother, Mrs. Wells, South Road, returned to Shannon, during the week.

Mrs. Don Wilson, Wellington, is staying with Mrs. E. M. Bardsley, Gladstone Street.

Miss Zita Donnelly left last week for Auckland, where she will attend the training college.

Mrs. Pivac and her daughter left during the week for Auckland. Mrs. W. Syme returned home during the week-end from a visit to her daughter, Mrs. H. T. Underhill, Wellington. Mrs. Harvey, Urenui, is visiting Mrs. A H. Harvey, Glover Road. Mr. and Mrs. John Dash, and their son Brian, of Palmerston North, have recently come to reside in Hawera, Mr. Dash being the newly appointed headmaster of the Hawera High School. Miss Muriel Strange and Miss Ethel Murdoch, who hnve been on a motor tour of the North Island for the past few weeks, returned home on Thursday evening.

Miss Audrey Cuming, Napier, who has been staying with Miss Nancy Duckworth, returned home during the week.

Mrs H. Crump and Mrs. Crump, sen., returned to Wellington on Tuesday. Mrs. Petrie, of Invercargill, is Miss E. Caplen’s guest. Mrs. Grimwade, of Auckland, who has been Mrs. H. R. Kemp’s guest, left during the week for New Plymouth, where she will spend a few days prior to her return home.

Mrs G. W. Powdrell has been spending a week in Eltham as Mrs. J. Valentine’s guest Dr. and Mrs. John Plimmer, of Wellington, who were Mrs. H. H. Bramwell’s guests, returned home early in the week.

Mrs. Lash, of New Plymouth, who has been staying with her sister, Mrs. John Ogle, for a few weeks past, leaves for home to-day.

Mrs. Charlie Bayley returned home last week after spending several weeks with friends in Masterton.

Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Strange and Mr. and Mrs. Allwright leave on Wednesday for two weeks’ motor and camping tour of the Tauranga and Coromandel districts.

On Monday afternoon Mrs. H. D. Cameron was hostess at tea, wearing a pretty frock of claret toned chiffon to receive her guests. Her mother, Mis. Moorhouse, wore a black georgette gown. Mesdames Channing, Tonks, Powdrell, E. R. Dale, A. K. Tennent, W. J. Bright, A. Woodward, C. Bayley, D. G. Smart, and Miss B. Watty (Auckland) were among those entertained. Among others who entertained friends at tea during the week were Mrs. Douglas Hill on Thursday afternoon, .Mrs. R. B. Douglas on Saturday, Mrs. Arthur Coleman on Thursday and Mrs. G. A. Burgess was “at home” on Tuesday afternoon.

Mrs. Hugh McWilliam entertained a number of friends at tea last week to meet Mrs. Elwyn Lloyd, who recently came to reside here.

Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Dwyer, Wellington, who have been Mrs. Donnelly’s guests at “Brodella” for the past week, will leave this morning on their return south.

Mrs. F. B. Wylds has taken a furnished cottage at Fitzroy for a month or two and will leave for New Plymouth shortly, accompanied by Misses Peggy and Josephine Wylds. Mrs. L. B. Lewis entertained at an afternoon party and an enjoyable evening’s bridge on Monday for Mrs. Lash, a New Plymouth visitor here. Mrs. A. H. Harvey also entertained a few friends at tea for Mrs. Lash on Wednesday afternoon. During the week Mrs. N. F. Stead was hostess at tea in Mrs. Lash’s honour. Mrs. Stead wore a mode of cinnamon brown angel skin silk crepe. Mrs. Lash, New Plymouth, wore a smartly cut frock of leaf green silk milesta with hat to tone. Mesdames E. M. Bardsley, Lash, H. Jenkins, A. H. Harvey, John Ogle, R. Ward, W. H. Snowsill and L. B. Lewis were among the guests at tea. RECEPTION. Mrs. Dowling’s reception room and hall at 34, Argyle Street were prettily decorated with bowls of hydrangea, dahlias and tamerisk on Tuesday afternoon, when Mrs. Dowling entertained friends to meet Mrs. John Dash, wife of the recently appointed principal of the Hawera Technical High School. The hostess was dressed in floral crepe de chine with a black ground, and Mrs. Dash wore a smart nigger brown costume and hat, with touches of tangerine and scarf to tone. After a few words of welcome to the guest of honour, Mrs. Dowlirfg asked her to accept a sheath of pink carnations, roses and fern, with the best wishes of the ladies present for a happy time in Hawera. A delightful afternoon |ea was then served, after which an amusing competition was held, the winner 'being Mrs. H. R. Kemp. The guests present were: Mrs. Dash and Mesdames,. Douglas Hill, C. G.
