FATHER JENSON’S DEPARTURE. The Ohura Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union celebrated its fifth birthday on Thursday afternoon, when a very large attendance of members and visitors gathered at the Ohura Town Hall to cut the birthday cake which was provided by the secretary, Mrs. Dons. The candles on the cake were lit amid much enthusiasm, by the former president, Mrs. N. J. B. Dougherty. . .. Representatives of the various ladies’ organisations were present as guests of the division. The gathering was presided over by Mrs. Julian, who reviewed the activities of the branch during the past year. Other speeches were made by Mrs. Coogan (president of the Taumarunui branch), Mrs. Loft senr. (president of the Ladies’ Rest-room Association and Anglican Ladies’ Guild), Mrs. Harold Seerup (president of the Plunket Society), Mrs. Jenks (president of Girl Guides), and Mrs. Dawber . (president of the Methodist Ladies’ Guild). Mrs. Julian presented, bouquets to Mesdames Coogan, Loft, Doris, Gibson, Sanderson, Jenks, Seerup and Dawber. A musical programme was provided by the following: Pianoforte duet, Mrs. and Miss Wagstaff, songs, songs, Mesdames Dons, Jenks, Dawber, Stoddart and Taylor; ■ pianoforte solo, Mrs. Stoddart, The accompaniments were played by Mrs. Turnbull. Afternoon tea was provided by ladies of the branch. A farewell to Father Jenson and a welcome to Father Wanders was given by Mrs. Koorey senr. at her residence on Thursday evening. Amongst those present were Mesdames La. Hood, H. Seerup, Bousfield, Freeman, Roy Ward, Smith junr., Gill, McClenaghan, Monsoor, C. Friel, J. Koorey, Misses Koorey (3), Goldfinch (2), Styles, K. Stevenson, Cording, R. Gill, Inwood and Smith. Songs were sung by Mrs. Harold Seerup, Messrs. Jack McClenaghan and P. Goldfinch. Father Wanders gave some songs in Maori, and regaled the company with humorous stories. Mr. speaking on behalf of the parishioners, voiced the’high opinion the Rev. Father Jenson had gained throughout the district from all shades of opinion, and presented him with a travelling rag. Mr. McClenaghan also welcomed Father Wanders to the district. Father Jenson responded, and Father Wanders thanked those present for their hospitable welcome. The Ohura A. and P. Association will hold its 23rd annual show at its showgrounds, Nihoriiho, on February 22 and 23. This annual fixture is a very popular one in the district and exhibits are usually of a very high standard. This years show is expected to be very good indeed, both for live stock and produce. The valley has had a wonderful season; warm weather with rain very evenly spread has been of immense good gener- | ally. It is expected entries of all kinds will be very heavy. In connection with the show there will also be a ram fair on the Wednesday, which is expected to be well patronised. INTER-CLUB CROQUET GAME. AVON TEAM DEFEAT ELTHAM. A very pleasant, day was spent on the Avon croquet lawns on Friday last, when six players visited the. greens to play an inter-club match. Folowing a closely contested game. Avon emerged the winnings by 13 points. _ The teams were: —Eltham: Mrs. McKay, Mrs. Fountaine, Mrs. Manley and Miss McDonald, Mrs. Cooper and Mis. Thomas. Avon: Mrs. Lampshire and Mrs. Jenkin, Mrs. North and McCready, Mrs. Wilson and Knight. ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEMENTS. An old-time and modem , dance will be held in the Cardiff hall to-morrow night. Novelty dances and cards for pon-dancers are features. Exhibitors are reminded that entries for the Eltham horticultural summer show next Wednesday will close with the ■ secretary, Miss A. Wilson, this evening.
