ELTHAM RELIEF WORKERS

INCREASE IN ALLOCATION. REPLY TO MR. C. A. WILKINSON.Following the deputation of Eltham relief workers which recently waited upon him, and the representations he made to the Unemployment Board, Mr. C. A. Wilkinson, M.P., has received the following cable from the Commissioner of Unemployment:—“l find that the Eltham allocation is on the same basis as. all other centres in Taranaki with the exception of New Plymouth. As a result notification-received yesterday of increase in the allocation is accordingly being increased by £ll 17s, mak- ■ ing a total of £97 15s. The reason for the cut in allocations is that in farming districts at this time of the year it is considered men should be able to supplement payment received from unemployment funds by obtaining other work. The present allocation is in excess of the amount allocated at this period of last year. “An examination of recent pay-sheets would appear to indicate that allocations are being divided according to circumstances of the men, some receiving £6 monthly. Investigation discloses that those receiving £4 16s monthly are required to work only three and a-quarter days each three weeks out of four, so that except on nine and three-quarter days they are at liberty to accept what other ■ work offers during the month.” HUIROA DISTRICT NEWS. ELTHAM TALKIES. “GOOD-NIGHT VIENNA.” The British musical comedy, “Goodnight Vienna,” will be shown to-night at Eltham. It sparkles with wit against a background of haunting melodies and tuneful songs such as “Goodnight Vienna,” “My Pretty Flowers,” and "Just Heaven,” sung by Jack Buchanan and beautiful Anna Neagle, the celebrated English musical comedy star.
