GOAT MENACE SERIOUS
VALUE OF FOREST TO PROVINCE. WARNING BY MR. W. H. SKINNER. *‘l have been intimately associated with the National Park reserve for 60 years,” said Mr. W. H. Skinner at the meeting of the North committee of the Egmont National Park Board last night when the menace of goats was under discussion. “The 1 public does not realise the enormous value of the forest to the province and it is most regrettable to see the depredation already ’ caused by goats.” It was reported that a herd of 15 goats' had been seen at Humphries’ Castle recently, and that others on the ranges had been visible from North Egmont House. It was- stated also that a herd of 24 had been seen at Warwick Castle on the eastern side of the mountain, of which 15 had been destroyed. Goats had also been discovered recently well down the slopes of the Pouakai ranges, it was stated, and the committee decided to forward the information it had received to the Egmont National Park Board.
