Mr. H. Gilmore Smith, registrar of the Supreme Court for Taranaki, returned to New Plymouth last night from a holiday in the south. It is understood that Mr. Justice Ostler will preside at the next Supreme Court session at New Plymouth. , Sir Edwin Mitchelson, who is ill, was granted leave of absence for the remainder of the session by the Legislative Council yesterday, the Press Association reports. /

The recently appointed senior school inspector, Mr. A. Bain, 8.A., has commenced duty in Taranaki. Last year Mr. Bain was acting senior inspector at Dunedin. He will reside at New Plymouth.

The death occurred in the Palmerston North Hospital on Saturday of Mr. J. A. Farmer, a well-known North Island horse trainer. The late Mr. Farmer acted as private trainer to Mr. W. E. Bidwill, of the Wairarapa, for a number of years, during which time he was responsible for' the training of many successful hprses. The death occurred in Wellington on Monday of Mr. Charles Alexander Lawrence, of the. architectural firm of Swan, Lawrence and Swan, Wellington Terrace. Just before Christmas Mr. Lawrence decided to take a holiday, and left Wellington for Sydney, en route to Java and Singapore. While on the steamer he became ill, and on reaching Sydney was taken to a hospital. After being treated there for some weeks, he returned to Wellington a few days ago.

A very wide sympathy will be felt with the general manager of the New Zealand Broadcasting Board, Mr. E. C. Hands, in the sudden death on Sunday of his daughter, Joan Rosalind. Miss Hand’s was a charming and promising personality, and was,a favourite with a wide circle of college and personal friends. She was a skilled musician, and in addition possessed distinctive athletic ability, particularly in swimming, The illness which terminated fatally originated with a poisoned lip, on which pneumonia supervened. The Rt. Rev. F. A. Bennett, Bishop of Aotearoa will arrive at Waitara to-day from Hawke’s Bay. He will stay at the Maori mission house at Waitara. To-day will be a free day for him. To-morrow he will be occupied with private interviews and on Friday he will visit the Urenui pa. Saturday afternoon will be spent with the Maori Sunday school children at their annual treat at Waitara. On Sunday Bishop Bennett will conduct a service for Maoris in St. John’s Church, Waitara, in the morning, and in the evening he will preach in the church at evensong. On Monday he will leave Waitara for the Okato district, where he will stay over Tuesday. On Wednesday morning he will come to New Plymouth to stay at St. Mary’s vicarage. He will preach in St. Mary’s Church in the evening. Next morning he will go to Mahoenui, and will later go on to the Waikato.
