FROM TRACK AND STABLE

FORM OF TWO-YEAR-OLDS

HAROLD LOGAN AND' ROE L'OR.

IMPASTO'S IMPROVEMENT.

(By “Hurry On.”)

Merry Lap (7.5) was omitted from the published list of weights for, the Hauraki Handicap on the first day of the Takapuna Jockey Club’s summer meeting. Valpai, who raced with such exasperating luck at New Plymouth and Stratford during the holidays,. is in steady work at Te Rapa and is hitting out really wall. He will make his next appearance at Takapuna and should not be long, in getting on to the winning list again. Tradesman is working well at Te Rapafter his short rest owing to the soreness that troubled him just before Christmas. He will . probably race on the Taranaki circuit next month, when he will be accompanied by Welcome Lu. Refresher ran a surprisingly good race in the Cup yesterday. He was always with the leaders and seemed to have a winning chance half way up the straight, but the iast bit just found him out. A shorter race later in the meeting should -see him do better. The Te Awamutu-trained two-year-old Impasto is reported to be looking much improved as a result of his racing at Ellerslie. In the north they have a-great opinion of this son of High Art, who is said to be the ideal type of a Derby colt. The stock. of High Art are already turning out stayers, one of his progeny, Highbroney, having won the Tasmanian Derby last month. Chief Line Backed.

Ridden by' A. E. Ellie, the Haweratrained Chief Line was sent out a good second favourite in the Highweight at Trentham yesterday but could only fill fourth place. It is rather hard to understand how he came in for such good support as his form on the Taranaki holiday ! circuit was moderate, his ■ best effort ’ being a second to Bugle Call the second day at New Plymouth, when those who finished behind him were very ordinary. Guarantee’s Stakes Win.

The 'failure of Diatomous and Princess Doreen in the Wellington Stakes yesterday would come as a shock to their admirers, as on Ellerslie running these two.looked probably the best two-year-olds. In the Trentham event Guarantee asserted his superiority in no uncertain manner and finished in a way which suggests that he will stay. When tried out early in the- season Garter Knight, by Limond-Anklet, was definitely superior to Guarantee and Was sent to Sydney for the Breeders’ Plate. H 6 was unfortunate enough to suffer rather severe injuries on the voyage and has not yet been able to race. Guarantee, however, is proving a first-class substitute, and if Garter Knight is better he must be a really top class colt. Antique’s Fine Performance. What a great horse Antique is! Though he failed-by a neck in the. Wellington Cup yesterday all the honours of the race Were with him. He was conceding the other place-getters two stone and then only just went under in a great finish despite his. welter burden of 9.5. It was a fine performance and stamps this son of Tonbridge as one of the best handicap horses we have seen for some time. It was certainly no disgrave to be beaten by a Mitchelson Cup winner in Royal Artist with only 7.5 to carry. Should Antique win a race at the gathering he will assuredly get a rousing reception from the crowd. Champion Pacers to Meet.

Th race between Harold Logan and Roi L’Or, the champion pacers of the Dominion, which is expected to take place at Timaru on Saturday, will create interest in all parts of the Dominion. Both horses have shown themselves in form recently, and the contest between them should be a great draw. Harold Logan has the best credentials over' two miles, but Roi L’Or defeated him at a mile and a-quarter in the Free-for-All at Addington in November. That the race was truly run was shown by the time recorded, Roi L’Or establishing a fresh record of 2.38 1-5, while Harold Logan equalled his previous best with 2.38 2-5. It would' be - better test if the pair were matched over the three distances, namely, a mile, a mile and a-half,-and two miles, but their meeting at a mile and a-quarter should be highly exciting. Contests of this description are not frequent in New Zealand, and some of the past ones have not proved as interesting as generally, expected. Ribbonwood defeated Fritz very easily when they were matched,, and Native Chief, after several false starts, finally got away well to win his contest with Great Bingen. The Karo. Peter-First Wrack match at Alexandra Park was another that also failed to come up to expectations. However, Harold Logan and Roi L’Or are exceptionally good horses, and they should provide a brilliant exhibition of pacing. WIN SYSTEM AT NAPIER. DECISION OF THE RACING CLUB. Napier, Jan. 19. The Napier Park Racing Club, which is holding a -meeting on January 28 as a part of the re-opening of Napier celebrations, decided to adopt the win and place system of investments on the totalisator. The committee has received over 100 nominations which augurs well for a successful meeting.
