The Wellington summer races Opened to-day in brilliant weather and before a good attendance. Win and place betting was introduced and resulted in some excellent dividends being returned. Beau Gallante Wins Easily. The favourite for the Trentham Highweight, Beau Gallante, scored a simple victory with Clangor, who made all the running. Clangor retired at the distance and Beau Gallante shook off challengers to win comfortably by a. length from Cape Fair, who finished fast on the rails and just beat Monastic out of secona money. Chief Line was fourth and Saltpot, Golden Horn and Blacksmith next. Beau Gallante should win in better company. Chief Line would have paid a place dividend had he not lost some ground in a snap start. Defeat of Diatomous.

The Wellington Stakes saw the defeat of the hot favourite Diatomous. Diatomous began well and was first on to the course proper with Princess Doreen next, but Midinette had headed the two-year-olds at the distance and seemed to have the race in hand when Guarantee

-got up in the last few strides to win by a neck. Lack was a couple of lengths away third and Inflation fourth. Then came Diatomous, Good Hunting and Princess Doreen. Inflation’s finishing run was particularly good. He should win soon.

Broken Rule’s Dividend. Broken Rule paid a big dividend when she won the Apprentice’s Plate and all the place dividends were good. Purse was soon in the lead and was "still Tint front coming into the straight from Glenvane, Broken Rule, Niggerhead, Beaconsfield and Aiguille. In a great finish Broken Rule beat Niggerhead by a nose. Farmer was a length away third with Aiguille a close fourth and Azalea, Beaconsfield, Eminent; Purse and Glenvane all close behind the' placed division. Glenvane was going well at the home turn and should run a good race in the Douro Cup. Porotiti scores narrowly.

Backed to a short price in the Fitzherbert Handicap, Porotiti won but had little to spare at the finish. Lady Nan and Porotiti led on .to. the., course prbper, where Bon Rapide and Pegged Exchange were handy. Sweet Agnes joined in and a : good race io the winning post followed. Porotiti held an advantage to the end, winning by a neck ' from Pegged Exchange, a head in front of Lady Nan'. Sweet Agnes, Bon Rapide and Catalogue followed. . ■ Great Race for Cup.

The Wellington Cup' was another great race and all the dividends were good. Great Star and Princess. Argosy made' the early running, and passing the mile post Refresher, Gold Trail,- Fiji and Jalou* were closest to them. Refresher joined Princess Argosy five furlongs from home and these two came into the straight together just ahead of Great Star,' Red Heckle, Fiji, Tout le Mond and Royal Artist, with Antique coining, round the outside. Fiji hit the front half way along the straight, but Royal Artist came through on the rails and Antique moved up on the other. The three crossed the line almost ori terms, Royal Artist winning by half a neck from Antique, Fiji being a nose away. Jaloux was fourth. Then came Refresher, Great Star, Retract, Rocket, Tout le Mond and Greenhorn. The manner in which Fiji persisted surprised. Antique came from a long- way back and his finish was very fine. Refresher ran a good race for a mile and a-quarter but did not lasr much longer. Jaloux had every chance. Ruling Light by a Neck. Drum Fire and Ruling Light went out very fast in the Anniversary Handicap and led round the home turn, Where Martian Chief, Awaken, Tahoma, La Poupee and Richfield were closing up. In one more great finish Ruling Light won by a nedk from Tahoma. Tahoma had only. half, a head to spare over Drum Fire and Shatter. Martian Chief, Rational 11. and Richfield were all handy at the finish. Ruling Light stuck on well when challenged and so did Drum Fire. Drum Fire should win very soon. Richfield, looking well, ran a good race and has a prospect at the meeting. Martian Chief and Awaken both should improve as a result of the race. Autopay Wins Well.

Autopay was one of the leaders all the way inthe Telegraph Handicap and won well. He came on to the course proper just behind Souchong, with Pohlp, The Quorn and Orapai next, and in the run home held his own to win by half a length from Souchong. Pomp was only a head away third'. Lotdly Knight was fourth and Orapai fifth. Autopay seemed always a winner. Orapai will be hard to beat during the meeting. Golden Wing's and Grecian Prince were left. Hula Belle Finishes Well.

Wasteland, Zeebrugge and Solitaire 11. went very fast in the early part of the Ruapehu Hack Handicap, but Hula Belle finished best from a position just behind the leaders and won by a neck from Chief Light, with Zeebrugge a close third and Nebulae a fair fourth. Then cams Slippery and Navaho. Chief Light may win at the meeting and Navaho will improve. Shelter galloped the full distance before the race and the field was kept waiting for him. > ■ A.J.C.
