NAPIER HARBOUR SCHEME
£400,000 PROPOSAL ADOPTED DEEP-SEA PORT AT BREAKWATER. THREE YEARS’ WORK FOR 200 MEN. ■ EXECUTION SPREAD UNTIL 1937. jjy Telegraph.—Press Association. Napier, Dec. 20. The Napier Harbour Board has adopted proposals for the exertion of the scheme outlined by Mr. P- W. ert (former chief enginer• of the Pubhc Works Department) and Mr. D. Holderness (consulting engineer) for the development of a deep-sea harbour at the breakwater. ' ' ■ The scheme provides for an expenditure of £406,700, £71,000 of which is to be secured immediately. Of the latter amdUnt £ll,OOO is to be .used for maintenance of the Inner Harbour until such time as the breakwater can accommodate lighters and other small craft. . The execution of the scheme is to be spread over 4J years and interest and sinking fund are to be met by imposing an extra shilling per ton on all cargo during that period. The estimated work will provide constant employment for 200 men for three years. Full award wages are to be paid. The work will be done by contract with expected assistance by way of an Unemployment Board subsidy.
