BRITAIN ESCAPES WORST
WORLD’S TRADE DECLINE
FAVOURABLE COMPARISONS
RESULTS OF OWN EFFORTS

By Telegraph—-Pre* Awn.—Copyright. Rec. 5.5 p.m. London, Dec. 19. Sir Henry Betterton, Minister of Labour, in the House of Commons to-day presented the Supplementary Estimates of £18,000,000, mostly needed for payments to unemployed. Sir Henry said that though the deterioration of world conditions continued, Britain as the result of her own efforts and sacrifices had undeniably escaped its worst effects. Britain’s exports for the last eleven months only declined 6.9 per cent., compared with United. States 35.7, Germany 41.1, France 37.3 and Italy 33.3. Thus while Britain was holding her own there was serious progressive deterioration in every other country except the Dominions. Dr. L. Burgin, Secretary to the Board of Trade, informed a questioner that 218 foreign-controlled factories were now operating in Britain, employing 9361 people. The number was expected to rise to 14,000 when the factories were fully occupied.
