END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR. ' Friday saw the break-up of the Hurleyville school, which took the form of a picnic, sports and prize giving. About eleven o’clock the scholars with parents and friends began to assemble, and at noon lunch was served under a shady oak tree by members of the committee, their wives and the teacher, Mrs. Fullarton. After lunch sports were organised by Messrs. Craft, Adlam and Rodley. The children under school age were also given a toy each. A young lady’s race was won by Miss Laura Burkhart, Miss McDonald being second. The married ladies’ race resulted in a win for Mrs. R. Douglas, Mrs. S. Adlam being second. When afternoon tea had been partaken of Mr. Rodley congratulated Mrs. Fullarton upon the success of her two candidates for proficiency, and upon the success of the school, every pupil having been promoted to a higher standard. He then presented each pupil with a book. Later in the afternoon Mary Burkhart, dux of the school, presented Mrs. Fullarton, on behalf of the v school, with a dainty gift of china. Cheers were given for committee and teacher, and after a lollie scramble the gathering dispersed, A euchre party and dance was held recently in the hall in aid of the tennis .club’s funds. About ten tables were occupied for euchre. Miss Joyce Allan won the prize for ladies, and Mr. Len McKetich the men’s. Dance music was provided by.-Mrs. Doiiglas. Mr. L. Goodsonj who met with an accident about a month ago, has recovered sufficiently to leave hospital. He returned home last week. Miss E. Walker is staying with her sister, Mrs. R. Hurley. Master Tim Hurley, who has been a patient in Patea Hospital, is expected home early this week. At a meeting of the hall committee held on Tuesday evening it was decided to instal electricity in the hall, providing the cost is reasonable. Those present were Mr. D. Hurley (chairman), Miss Scown (secretary), Messrs. Hunt, Prouse and Mrs. Adlam.
