SCHOOL BREAKING-UP. On Thursday afternoon a large number of parents assembled at the Auroa school for the ’ breaking-up ceremony, which took the form of a parents’ afternoon. The. drum and fife band played a number of selections, which were much appreciated, and Miss Scptt’s pupils rendered a number of items, including “The Little Nut Tree” and a dance and an action song “Little Boy Blue.” Miss Harkness’ pupils followed with the singing of “Strawberry Fair” and the following recitations were well given: “Sometimes,” by Lois Haworth; “Missing,” by Nellie Walker; and “Boy or Bird,” by Donald Caldwell. Standards 1,2 and 3 rendered an interesting playette entitled “How the Union Jack was Made,” which proved most instructive. The leading parts were well taken by Norman Johnson, Doreen Fairbrother.. and Tom Haworth. The senior pupils sang extracts from their year’s programme of songs, which were much enjoyed. The chairman, Mr. Caldwell, presented certificates to the successful proficiency candidates, and a badge to Leslie Muggeridge for the best mangold crop. MrCaldwell congratulated the pupils on their afternoon’s programme, and the teachers on their work. After the singing of the National Anthem afternoon tea was served and all enjoyed an inspection of the year’s handwork. They were interested in the needlework and the useful articles made from sugar bags and waste materials.
