TE KIRI NEWS
SCHOOL CHRISTMAS TREE. .... WAITIAKE BREAKING-UP. To mark the close of the school year and to celebrate the occasion of Christmas a school breaking-up party was held in the Te Kiri hall last Thursday. At an early hour the children were gathered at the hall, where games, dances arid songs were the order of the day. While these events were in progress Father Christmas arrived in his customary style. Every child was presented to the man of the season from whose hand each one received a festive paper hat and a bag of sweets. Then the children were seated around a much laden Christmas tree, gaily decorated with balloons, flowers arid coloured lights. Father Christmas presented a gift to every child in the district, after which he spoke a few seasonable words, leaving then for other schools. The children were next seated at a laden table. For these dainties a band of ladies who worked very hard and unostentatiously are to be heartily thanked. While the adults had the floor Mr. Coxhead, chairman of the school committee, after a speech eulogising Miss Wright’s service to the district, called on her to receive as a small token of regard a crystal set. Miss Wright expressed her regret at leaving Te Kiri, where the work has been so original. Mr. Nobbs also spoke. The annual breaking-up ceremony in connectiori with the Waitiake school was held on Thursday night, there being a large attendance. A very enjoyable programme was given by the children. The items were as follow; Recitation, by juniors; song, “Dutch Doll”; recitation, “Walter”; players, “Catching the Train”; song, “Oh, Hush Thee”; recitation, “Tom Sawyer”; playette, “Uncle Peter’s Gift”; songs, “The Orderly’s Song” and “My Dream Boat”; action song, “My Pigeon House”; folk dancing, “AU Black Brothers.” Miss Phillips is staying with her sister, Mrs. Ewart
