FROM TRACK AND STABLE

SUCCESS FOR HAVERING TARANAKI HORSES P’REPARING. ROYAL BENGAL’S PROGRESS.

(By

“Hurry On.”).

Sydney reports .have indicated that Havering was on the improve, but his defeat of Eurythmic’s much-boomed half-brother Salvador in the Rosehill Handicap on Saturday would scarcely have been expected. Havering’s win, however, appears to have been a decisive one and the time, 2min. 6sec., is good for the course at this time of the year. King March, one of J. T. Jamieson’s string, added another to his list of failures in this event. The win of Lord Ranald in the steeplechase at the South Canterbury Hunt meeting on Saturday is sure to bring him well into the market for the Grand National at Riccarton, though as he is not too sound there may be no great anxiety on the part of ante-post bettors to be with him as yet. If, however, he goes to the post he will very nearly be favourite. He has proved his worth over the Riccarton fences, and with his light weight may make things very interesting for Billy Boy and company. Though the Hawera horse Orby’s Choice paid two dividends at Gisborne on Saturday, the trip would not be a profitable one for his owner-trainer, R. Brough, as the cost of travelling would be high and the stakes were Small.

New Plymouth Track. The New Plymouth track was again in splendid order for the work on Saturday morning and several of the trainers took the opportunity to gallop their charges. • Merry Way by herself ran five furlongs nicely in Imin. 7sec. This filly is a lazy worker unless she has company.

Orapai and Glowlight took Imin. 6sec. for a similar distance, Orapai pleasing more than his companion. Assisted by Tigerism over the first half-mile and the Catmint mare over the last three furlongs, the Winter Cup candidate Royal Bengal ran seven furlongs in Imin. 33sec., and did it well. He should strip a fit horse at Riccarton. Easter Time was always going well to record Imin. 4sec. for five furlongs. Gold Dawn did six furlongs easily in Imin. 20sec., moving with all her old freedom.

Little Doubt and Gibraltar went six furlongs, the last five taking Imin. 8| sec. Gibraltar went better than he did on Thursday, but the time was not fast. The two-year-olds No Doubt and Bold Bid dashed over two furlongs in great style in 25jsec., Bold Bid being a head in front at the finish. No Doubt is the more forward of the pair, but Bold Bid has a fine style of galloping. Fast Work at Hawera.

The Hawera tracks were in splendid order on Saturday morning, when all the fast work took place on the trial grass. La Crown, who looks well after her spell, went a mile and a quarter at halfpace. Royal Papa ‘and Aga Khan were both going easily at the end of half a mile in 52sec.

Divola went once round at half-pace.

Chief Link had Tenacre as a companion over a mile, but there was not it great deal of pace on until the last three furlongs, which took 39 3-ssee. Both horses worked attractively. Chief Line did half-pace work. Silvermine and Miss Shef ran the last four furlongs of a mile in 54sec. Green Linnet did jogging exercise on the lead.

Constant Sun and Davidstock separately did two rounds at half-pace. Peschieva and two two-year-olds, Golden Hair and a youngster by Grandcourt

—Table Talk, took 25 J sec. for two furlongs, Peschieva and Golden Hair being two lengths in front at the finish. Nukumai, Calamine and Kissless were sent over five schooling hurdles. The first two gave a fine display, with Nukumai just shading the mare, but Kissless, who appeared sore, was some distance back. , , . Seamond showed a lot of pace over three furlongs in 36Jsec. This filly is doing very well and should not be long winning a race.
