TROTTERS AND PACERS

high grade performers \ FINE SPORT LAST SEASON. PROSPECTS FOR THE NEW TERM. (Special to News.) Auckland, July 30. Monday, August 1, marks the opening of a new trotting and racing season. Excepting that stakes have been largely reduced all round, which was unavoidable owing to the financial stringency seriously aifecting the revenue of clubs, the calibre of the trotting sport has been well maintained, and in both islands some very high-class performances during the season just concluded have been recorded. Harold Logan, probably the greatest pacer the Dominion has produced, won the New Zealand Cup in record time, giving further illustration of his remarkable speed and-stamina. Royal Silk, who quickly rose from the ranks of the improvers, displayed rare form, and amon» several good handicaps won the Auckland and Wellington Gold Cups, while Regal Voyage, another performer of note, was successful in the Dominions other big item, the Dunedin Cup. In spite of advancing years the evergreen Jewel Pointer, the idol of Auckland, trotting patrons, registered the greatest performance of his career when at Epiom he-won the Champion Handicap in the record time of 2min. 40 l-asec., defeating two of the Dominion’s crack pacers, Wrackler and Peter Bingen, at level handicaps. Red Shadow and Arethusa, the champion three-year-olds of the previous year, continued, to display good form as four-year-olds, and both raced in fine style. Tempest and Giro were the three-year-old classic winners of the past season, the former scoring in the Great Northern Derby, while Giro was successful in the New Zealand Derby. Another of the same age to show promise in the north, although not engaged in the classic races, was Pegaway, and. a meeting between the Aucklander and the two southern youngsters would have created a- lot of interest in the latterpart of the season. A striking feature of the season was the conversion of Wrackler, a dual Derby and New Zealand Cup winner, to the «rottin<r gait, at which he proved a fine success. The Australian trotter Huon Voyage was responsible for creating a fresh° twb-mile record at Addington, while the West Coast mare Olive Nelson proved one of the crack trotters of the year. The outlook for the new season. is 'particularly bright, as fax* as improving and high grade horses are concerned, and there should be no “sliding back’ when it comes to real tests of merit. With the ae.neral reduction in stakes and the extension of limits, the champions of the'day will not find many opportunities for racing, but in other. respects there is plenty of material likely to develop into high grade performers as the season progresses. There will also be no shortage of horses for country meetings, and before the season ends many 'pacers who won their way recently out of the novice ranks will be found taking high rank in the classes provided by the smaller trotting clubs. The following twelve horses, six from each island, may be mentioned as likely .to prove useful and profitable during the season now opening:— North Island.
