DEWAR SHIELD TOURNAMENT

TEN-A-SIDE FOOTBALL GAMES. Rugby enthusiasts this afternoon will have the opportunity of seeing practically every senior /footballer in Taranaki in action, the Dewar Shield competition being set down foi' decision at the Racecourse and Pukekura Park, New Plymouth. This year for probably the first time since its inception every Taranaki club is sending a team to the tournament, whilst additional interest is given by the presence of Awakino,'a team from the Tainui Sub-Union; The Dewar Shield tournaments in the past have produced some fine exhibitions of Rugby. Undoubtedly the standard of football as played by • the clubs in Taranaki this year has improved, whilst the playing of the tournament at the close of the first round instead of at the beginning of the season‘should be productive of better football,; as the teams are now at the top of their form. Kaponga are the present holders of the shield, with Star as runners-up.

FORMER INGLEWOOD PLAYER.

W. R. (Bill) /Allen, a former Inglewood and Stratford High School boy, captain of the Pirates Football Club, Dunedin, was the subject, of a special article in the Dunedin Evening Star last week. Allen, who is a' son of Air. and Airs. Dave Allen, well-known Inglewood residents, first came into prominence as wing-threequarter for the Inglewood primary school team which won the Taranaki central division’s championship and lost to the New Plymouth Boys’ High School preparatory team in the final. He played for his school for another two years and then went to the Stratford Technical High School, where in 1921 he was full-back in the team that played in the Taranaki junior competition, though he was only 14 years of age, and he showed solid defensive qualities.

Allen played in the school team in various positions from half-back to wing-threequarter till 1925, receiving coaching from Mr. D. J. Malone. In 1924 he was captain of the team and he played wing-threequarter for the Inglewood seniors oil Saturday afternoons. On leaving school he joined, the Stratford club and after a few games was transferred to Wanganui where he played for Kaierau, being coached by Mr. A. Takarangi. In 1926 and 1927 he was half-back for the Kaierau senior team which won the competition, and was selected to play for Wanganui against Rangitikei but was unable to make the trip. In 1928 he played centre threequarter for Oriental at Wellington and was chosen as emergency to play for Wellington against Taranaki at Hawera. He also played in the Wellington possibles v. probables match, when he sustained an injury. Early in 1929 Allen played for Oriental and was then transferred to Hamilton, playing for the City Club, Which won the championship there. Next i season he captained the City Club and represented Hamilton'"in the Peace Cup matches. As wing-threequarter he also played for Waikato against the British team, Auckland, Thames Valley, Hawke’s Bav and Taranaki. In 1930 he went to Dunedin and played for Pirates, representing Otago at ‘centre- threequarter, also the South Island in the same position. He has had considerable success as an athlete, winning the sports section of the Bayly scholarship among other successes, and has played a great deal of cricket in various centres.
